Training camp is always the first chance that fans have to see a sneak peek at what their team might look like once the NFL season actually begins, and with the Patriots heading back to practice this coming week, there will be a lot of eyes watching what the recent AFC Champions will look like after an offseason filled with plenty of changes.
The offense was a clear priority during free agency and the draft, with the offensive line being among the most improved groups on the team.
Perhaps the most notable upgrade of all is the addition of left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, who is set to take the starting role from Jared Wilson, who will move back to playing center, just as he did in college.
It's a shift that looked like the right move to make after the offensive line fell apart down the stretch of the postseason, particularly in the Super Bowl, making Vera-Tucker a welcome addition. His experience and versatility will be a significant factor in how they perform, and it would be fair to suggest that he might be the best surprise at training camp.
Because injuries have wreaked havoc on his NFL career so far, the 27-year-old hasn't been able to show everything he can do on the field just yet. The hope is that he will do just that with the Patriots, and an early indication of what will happen during training camp.
Alijah Vera-Tucker is on the brink of a breakout season in his first year with the Patriots
There is a lot of hype around Vera-Tucker for that reason, especially since his presence should play a massive role in helping second-year left tackle Will Campbell perform at a higher level.
That, coupled with his potential for a breakout, as noted by FanSided's Mike Phillips, could lead to a Pro Bowl-level season, which is exactly the kind of performance the Patriots' offense, particularly Drake Maye, needs during a brutal 2026 schedule.
"The offensive line was a big issue for the Patriots in the Super Bowl and they made a shrewd move to upgrade it when they signed Alijah Vera-Tucker away from the Jets.
Injuries have been a big issue for AVT, who has had season-ending injuries in three of the past four years, but he has shown he can play at a Pro Bowl level when healthy and is capable of playing every spot besides center."
Because he was a first-round pick in 2021, it's clear that Vera-Tucker has the skill set to be a top offensive lineman in the NFL when he's able to stay on the field. As we know, he's had the unfortunate luck of suffering season-ending injuries that have deterred what looked like a bright NFL future.
Now that he's about to start his first year in New England, and he's well on his way to being fully recovered from his latest injury, there's plenty of optimism that he will become the superstar that the Jets believed he could be.
The Patriots certainly need it on the left side of the offensive line, with the inexperience of Campbell becoming a problem late last year. On top of that, Wilson also became somewhat of a liability on the field, so there's a big opportunity for Vera-Tucker to bring the stabilization that was lacking in 2025, which in turn benefits the entire offense.
Essentially, he holds the key to Maye continuing to soar to the top of the league and providing the kind of protection on the offensive line that allows the receiving corps and run game to flourish.
It's a lot of pressure, but from the limited action he got during the spring, Vera-Tucker already looked ready to go, and his attitude matches that, too. So there's a good chance he will be the breakout player Patriots fans are hoping for throughout the summer.
