The New England Patriots reinforced an offensive line that managed to flake away in the postseason, signing right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker to a three-year contract after spending the first half-decade of his career with the rival New York Jets. This signing may have the widest range of outcomes of any move New England made this season.

Fansided.com listed the Patriots' decision to sign Vera-Tucker as their biggest gamble of the 2026 offseason, with his obvious injury concerns serving to limit his market. Committing to a multi-year contract in and of itself was surprising, as there's been little healthy AVT tape to lean on.

2024 is the only healthy season Vera-Tucker has strung together, and his injury history is a five-alarm fire. With two separate triceps tears on both sides of his body and an Achilles tear limiting him to 27 games over the last four seasons, Vera-Tucker's body could let the Patriots down in 2026.

Patriots' Alijah Vera-Tucker move named biggest gamble of 2026

Vera-Tucker was able to move between tackle and guard in New York, eventually settling in as a quality right guard. Even without a ton of talent around him, AVT was a rock-solid performer. The only reason the Jets didn't retain someone they traded up in the first round to acquire is the fact that his body is such a major question mark, and the new regime seemed unwilling to ride that roller coaster.

The Patriots still invested in Vera-Tucker as if he were one of the best guards in the AFC, and he managed to perform up to that billing when he was healthy with the Jets. Going from Zach Wilson and the ghost of Aaron Rodgers to Drake Maye is going to make any offensive lineman look better.

New England has enough depth to mitigate Vera-Tucker's health if he once again has some physical problems. Caedan Wallace is hovering around on the second team. While first-round pick Caleb Lomu projects to be the team's right tackle of the future, it wouldn't be the most outrageous idea in the world to kick him inside to guard for a few games.

The concerning part about the Vera-Tucker signing is there's little Mike Vrabel and the coaching staff can do. They need to cross their fingers and hope his body can hold up. However, if he does manage to suddenly become an ironman, the Patriots will get high-end right guard play after some struggles in that spot.
