After failing to take down the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, the Patriots biggest weakness going into the offseason was beyond clear: they needed to upgrade their offensive line. The group had unfortunately become a liability throughout the playoffs into the Championship game, making it easy to see where money needed to be spent in free agency and the draft.
They did just that when they signed Pro Bowl-level guard Alijah Vera Tucker, who immediately becomes their next starter and a mentor and major help to Will Campbell at left tackle after a rough postseason showing.
Vera-Tucker spent the first four years of his career with the Jets as a first-round draft pick in 2021, but was plagued with devastating injuries for most of his time in New York.
That makes him a bit of a risk in such an important position, but considering the kind of player he can be for the Patriots, there's reason to suggest he could become their biggest free-agent steal.
Several teams were willing to take that risk, too, because of the kind of player he has proven he can be on the field.
Chad Graff of The Athletic pointed that out in one of his recent player spotlights, stating that teams were "willing to take the risk because, for all of Vera-Tucker's injuries, his play when he has been on the field has been exceptional."
The Patriots were the lucky ones to sign him to a three-year, $48 million deal, and in a year, that might be their most under-the-radar steal on the roster.
Alijah Vera-Tucker has high expectations to live up to in his first year with the Patriots
Upon the announcement of his contract, many analysts and fans were concerned that the Patriots had dished out too much money to a player with a long history of injuries and that it could come back to haunt them in short order.
There is a chance it will happen, but Vera-Tucker's ceiling is what the offensive line needs, and when healthy, he's one of the best left guards in the league. That's not something the Patriots have had in quite some time, and there's plenty of reason to believe he will prove the risk was worth it as soon as this season.
Graff pointed out just how invaluable Vera-Tucker could become for the offense during his contract, especially since he has a unique versatility across the offensive line that the team could have really used last year.
"Vera-Tucker’s good is really good. He has versatility with different schemes thanks to his size and athleticism. He’s good as a pass protector and great as a run blocker. And he has been around long enough to bring some calm to a young offensive line, playing between Campbell and Wilson."
At this point, it looks like the pros outweigh the cons considerably, and there's a good chance the risk of signing Vera-Tucker will be worth the reward: exceptional performance.
He adds stability to the group they have been lacking for far too long, and will be a huge help to a player as inexperienced as Campbell, who already looks on the path to becoming even better than he was as a rookie.
Because the left side is Maye's blind side, it's crucial that they perform at a high level, and because they're set to face a gauntlet of a schedule in 2026, they will be lining up against some of the best defensive linemen in the league. Vera-Tucker's experience should be a massive upgrade in that area after what we saw in the playoffs and the Super Bowl.
If all goes to plan, he could become the latest steal the Patriots have added to the roster, and they should be applauded for such, particularly since they have received a lot of scrutiny for bringing him in.
