The Patriots were supposed to go into the 2026 offseason on a high after shocking everyone by winning 14 games and making it all the way to the Super Bowl last year. It was truly unexpected and not a feat any analyst or fan predicted, and although the Seahawks devastatingly defeated them, it was still impressive that they made it to the Championship after back-to-back 4-13 seasons.

Instead, the offseason began riddled with controversy surrounding Mike Vrabel and his alleged extra-marital affair with NFL insider Dianna Russini.

It dominated headlines in the weeks after the Super Bowl all the way through the NFL Draft, quickly becoming the talking point about the team rather than their most recent success and crucial offseason.

Now that the story has been part of the news cycle for a few months, it isn't as highlighted in the NFL stratosphere. Yet there are concerns about the overall impact on the roster, even though players have come out in support of Vrabel since the scandal broke.

At least for now, the latest update from an anonymous scout suggests the head coach still has the locker room, and the support isn't just an attempt to show unity to the media. In fact, Vrabel's leadership is something the players have bought into, especially as they are on track to remain a competitive team this fall.

That sends a loud message to what Vrabel needs to focus on this upcoming season.

Mike Vrabel has an even clearer focus going into the 2026 season than any other before

According to the staff at Athlon Sports, a rival scout confirmed that Vrabel hasn't lost the support of his players and believes that if they continue to win once the season begins, the scandal will continue to fade away.

“From what I’ve heard, the locker room has Mike Vrabel’s back. The scandal wasn’t a good look, obviously, and raises serious questions about his poor judgment and blurs the lines about journalistic integrity.

The bottom line, though, is that he’s a strong leader. Winning matters the most, not morals, and the league isn’t planning to punish Vrabes. If they’re off to a good start, this story eventually fades.”

If this isn't a clear sign of remainined focused on football and trying to keep winning, what else is?

Assuming he is determined to put this story behind him, it would be fair to suggest that Vrabel will be extra motivated to lead the Patriots to more wins this season, because the scout is right: in sports, winning trumps everything.

All the negative stuff goes away or, at the very least, is ignored because winning is always what everyone wants. It's not always the right thing, but it's just how things are in professional sports. And when it comes to a franchise like the Patriots, that couldn't be more true.

Winning is always the goal for every team every season, but when your offseason has been plagued with controversy, especially around your head coach, there's extra reason to stack the W's, and hopefully, that will ultimately come to fruition for the Patriots during what is considered one of the most difficult schedules in the league.

It's a tall task for Vrabel to achieve, and he has a lot to prove in accomplishing it. He achieved a lot of unforeseen success last year, so we'll have to see if he can replicate it again this season.
