It has been a few months since the Patriots lost Super Bowl LX to the Seahawks, and although it stings to reflect on the game, there are still plenty of things to discuss before the start of the 2026 season, most of which center on the obvious weaknesses they need to address.

Much of that was seen during their failed championship efforts, as the offense was unable to keep Seattle's impressive group at bay. It created a hostile environment for Drake Maye, who played some of his worst football of the season in the game, and proved just how far ahead the defense was and could continue to be moving forward.

Because of that, Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold had a good enough night to take home the Lombardi Trophy, but even he is still not completely satisfied with how his night went.

And he's now seemingly sending a message that his confidence going into that game was at an all-time high, proving the Patriots were being massively overlooked ahead of the big game.

Sam Darnold was looking forward to putting up 40+ points on the Patriots in Super Bowl LX

Going into the Super Bowl, the Patriots were undoubtedly considered underdogs, and it was hard to argue against that narrative. Because of that, it's unsurprising that the Seahawks were probably overlooking their opponent, and that is one way to interpret Darnold's latest comments on the game.

The quarterback spoke about his disappointment with his Championship performance, saying he wanted to put up "40 points," but he "didn't play great" instead.

“I didn’t play great in the Super Bowl. I missed way too many throws. We still won, our defense balled out, and I didn’t turn the ball over, which helped. But dude, to win the Super Bowl that way, I was kind of bummed. I want to freaking score like 40 points, you know what I mean? I want to go out there and ball out, and it’s just, ‘Dang, I didn’t play my best football in the Super Bowl? That sucks.’”

Clearly, Darnold's comments aren't exactly scathing by any means, nor does he directly call out the Patriots for their performance.

And while his hopes to put on a good show are valid and understandable, it's hard to overlook the idea that he was hoping to accomplish that against an opponent he believed would make that task easy, and that was the expectation against the Patriots for the entire two weeks leading up to the game.

The Seahawks likely adopted that mentality, and from some of their post-game comments, it would be fair to say that they did. So Darnold's latest take is just another hit to the heart for the Patriots and their fans, but fortunately, there's a lot to look forward to this upcoming season.

The Super Bowl may not have gone the way anyone hoped, but the fact that they even got there is something to be proud of and excited about. Now they just need to replicate that kind of success again this fall, and hopefully, their next Super Bowl appearance will end differently.
