It didn't take long for Stefon Diggs to get asked about his future with the New England Patriots after the team lost in Super Bowl LX. This has become more and more of a question, recently, even with players under contract.

After the game, when he was asked about his future with the team, which includes two years left on a deal he signed just last year, Diggs started out adamant that he'd like to be back. But, he quickly offered up an alternative outcome.

“Oh (expletive). Unless they opt out of the contract.

"I anticipate being here, so I hope so. Love my guys. I had a hell of a year playing with them. Built some real family-like bond, so I hope so, I don’t control it though.”

Stefon Diggs' future in New England is anything but set in stone

You can tell Diggs enjoyed this year in New England and wants to be back. But, he hinted at the situation being out of his control more than once. Whether it was his comment about the Patriots opting out or the literal "I don't control it" sentiment, he's very aware of the possibilities.

What he was alluding to is the idea that New England could choose to cut ties after just one season and save $20 million in the process. Now, the Patriots aren't exactly hurting for money as they currently have a projected $42 million in cap space.

The Patriots will have some decisions to make, though. Christian Gonzalez is the biggest name up for an extension and he will command a hefty price tag.

There is also something to be said about Diggs simply not being worth the money. Is he worth almost $22 million annually? Sure, he had a couple of notable games. But, almost everything he did this season felt largely replaceable.

The Patriots have a wide receiver room that's full of different and uniquely-talented players. But, does Drake Maye have that alpha in the room? It's safe to say Diggs is no longer that type at this stage in his career. The 32-year-old would make an excellent WR2 next to a top-tier name on the opposite side.

But, a WR2 isn't worth the price New England is paying Diggs -- not unless your name is George Pickens or Tee Higgins.

It sure sounds like he understands this could be a one-and-done year that ended just short of a Super Bowl title, but the next few weeks will tell us much of what we need to know.
