Arguably, one of the biggest weaknesses of the current Patriots' roster is their defensive line, specifically their pass rush, which is why analysts continue to mock a defensive end/EDGE player in the latest draft speculation. That doesn't mean, however, they won't add a veteran in free agency before that, and they now know that one of the more prominent names plans to play in 2026.
Khalil Mack has been a player discussed a lot in recent weeks as a target for New England, but his retirement was allegedly being considered since he is now 35 years old.
But the latest intel from NFL insider Ian Rapoport claims that Mack plans to play this fall, but who that will be for remains up in the air, as he heads to free agency.
#Chargers legend Khalil Mack, one of the top edges available, will play in 2026, sources say. At the age of 35, coming off a strong season, Mack is a priority for LA.

Mack is coming off a season where he logged 32 combined tackles, six for a loss, 11 quarterback hits, a safety, four forced fumbles, and 5.5 sacks. While it wasn't the best year of his career, it was still impressive for only playing in 12 games during the year.
His veteran experience and mentorship could be incredibly valuable to the mostly young Patriots roster, making him a desirable candidate to consider signing at least.

Although names like Trey Hendrickson and Odafe Oweh have been the most talked-about pass rushers for the Patriots so far this offseason, Mack has been climbing the ranks with the consistently changing rumors surrounding their availability.
The same can be said about a player like Maxx Crosby, who is likely going to be traded from the Raiders one day, and the complete opposite the next. The Patriots are said to be interested, but Las Vegas is also asking for what some analysts have deemed a super high asking price, which might deter Mike Vrabel and Co. from seriously pursuing him.
If that is accurate, then Mack becomes even more intriguing, even if he'd likely be a short-term solution for one of the roster's biggest weaknesses.
If he were only on the team for one season, his mentorship of the younger players, especially the expected EDGE player the Patriots will draft next month, would be invaluable. That could help set up their defense in a way the coaching staff can't on their own.
At the very least, hearing that Mack wants to play should prompt the Patriots look into the pros and cons of signing a veteran of his caliber.
