Former Patriots quarterback tabbed as possible trade target for Dolphins
The number of injuries that players have suffered already through just three weeks of the 2024 NFL season is astonishing. Many are top-of-the-league names who are either sidelined for the rest of the year or out for several weeks. The Patriots were unable to escape this fate, as linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley tore his pectoral in Week 2 against the Seahawks, ending his season.
Other teams have been dealt worse cards, like the Dolphins, who witnessed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffer another concussion that will sideline him indefinitely.
It has put their season on hold, with their backup quarterbacks unable to replicate the type of performance they expect out of their QB1, and now they might be in the market for an upgrade after a struggled-filled Week 3 game against the Seahawks.
They're expected to be looking at free agents, with former longtime Dolphin Ryan Tannehill still available, or even trade options, bringing a former Patriot into the mix. Some have tried to insert Tom Brady as a possibility, but luckily, that doesn't appear to be a realistic choice.
Instead, there is talk of the Dolphins being interested in a recently traded quarterback not too far from Miami.
The Dolphins might be looking to trade for Mac Jones after Tua Tagovailoa's injury
Despite his poor performance over the last two years in New England, which led to his trade to the Jaguars earlier this year, Mac Jones finds himself in the midst of another conversation about a team in need of a starting quarterback.
He is currently serving as Trevor Lawrence's backup and had a standout preseason that prompted talks of quarterback-needy teams looking his way. However, other players have been on the move ahead of Jones, which might change now if the Dolphins are looking for even a temporary fix under center.
Their offensive roster would be a good fit for Jones, who had a stacked team during his time at Alabama, one of whom was wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. Then there's Tyreek Hill and an impressive running back room, and it could be exactly the scenario for Jones to finally thrive in the NFL.
It likely wouldn't cost much for the Dolphins to get a deal done, as Jones was traded for a sixth-rounder earlier this year. On top of that, he's still on his rookie contract, making the decision a cheap one for Miami if they were, in fact, interested.
What they ultimately will do will be fascinating to watch, especially since their season looks nearly over without Taovailoa in the lineup.
