Although the Patriots' 2026 offseason hasn't been as exciting as last year's in many ways, aside from the trade for A.J. Brown, there are several players they signed in free agency who are worthy of much optimism ahead of a very telling season that is already projected to be incredibly difficult.
It's unlikely that the team will be able to replicate the unimaginable success they achieved last year, which resulted in a Super Bowl appearance. However, a few things are clear about what this team will be able to accomplish, and the most apparent of all is a top-10 defense again.
From rostering one of the worst groups in the league in 2024 to turning into a group that opposing offenses feared was a beyond impressive turnaround in just one year. And now that the Patriots have added a player like safety Kevin Byard III, the group has only gotten stronger.
The veteran is coming off one of the most impressive seasons of his 10-year career, earning his third Pro Bowl selection and leading the league with seven interceptions. His presence immediately elevates the secondary to its highest peak in several years, and the fact that he's already playing like a franchise great only makes it even better.
Kevin Byard is already reminding Patriots' reporters of one franchise great
That's the latest take from the Boston Globe's Christopher Price, who had nothing but glowing things to say about Byard at the end of minicamp last week.
In fact, he was so impressed with how he has looked this spring that Price compared Byard to Devin McCourty at his prime, and that couldn't be a more exciting comp to hear at this stage of the offseason.
"At safety, I’m not engaging in hyperbole when I suggest that Kevin Byard brings the consistency, smarts, toughness of vintage Devin McCourty."
Not only is Byard playing with a veteran edge reminiscent of McCourty, but Price also credits his consistency and toughness to the fan favorite, and that holds a lot of weight in their eyes, especially after the season the secondary had in 2025.
Byard can ensure that they continue to be a quarterback's worst nightmare this fall, and because he led the league in interceptions last year, there's no reason to believe he can't do that again or even help improve the performances of his new teammates like Carlton Davis and Christian Gonzalez.
They could arguably have the best secondary in the NFL if they all perform at the level they did last season, and that's exactly what the defense needs if they want to help ensure another Super Bowl run is possible.
Based on what we've seen so far, that looks more than achievable, but we also know that it won't be easy. Fortunately, additions like Byard will make it a little bit easier, and that's the complete opposite of what Patriots' rivals want to hear.
