Patriots quietly added the ideal mentor for one promising young defender

The signing of Kevin Byard was a major addition this offseason, and it could pay major dividends.

The New England Patriots made a plethora of additions this offseason, but none had more success last season than Kevin Byard, who was named a First Team All-Pro for the third time, leading the league in interceptions.

Byard's addition came at the expense of breakout safety Jaylinn Hawkins, who was a key piece to the secondary with four interceptions last season. He inked a two-year deal with the Ravens in March. Hawkins' running mate from the 2025 season, however, remains a key player and appears to be a future star on the back end of the defense.

After a strong regular season campaign that saw Craig Woodson rack up 79 tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries, the rookie recorded his first career interception against the Texans in New England's divisional round playoff win.

Now, Byard's tutelage could see a breakout sophomore campaign.

Craig Woodson could have a big break out season with Kevin Byard alongside him

Woodson's speed and strong rookie campaign should no doubt excite Patriots fans. While raw talent is no issue for the former Cal defender, a lack of experience is often a criticism leveled at all young players across the league.

With the signing of Kevin Byard, however, some of the learning curve that comes with the transition to the NFL may be easier for Woodson than it would have been otherwise. A three-time All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler, and two-time interceptions leader, Byard has all the accolades to back up what has been an incredibly successful career.

In a recent article from Mark Daniels of Mass Live, he cited quotes of Woodson's referring to the impact Byard has already made on him: "Just watching him, even during the little practices that we are having, just watching how he does things, it’s cool to have somebody like that with a lot of experience. I get to ask him a lot of questions in the locker room, on the field. I’m excited to play with him this season."

Byard was a captain for Mike Vrabel's Tennessee Titans from 2019 to 2023, as well as during both his seasons with the Bears, for a total of seven seasons as a captain in the NFL. It's impressive to see a player like Byard unite longevity, leadership, and ability, and he's the exact type of player that makes a great addition to the defensive backfield.

With a proven talent and rising star protecting the rear of New England's defense, Zak Kurh's unit should continue to dominate in 2026.
