Before the 2025 NFL season began, the Patriots were not considered a team the rest of the league needed to watch out for, as they were coming off another 4-13 season, with a new head coach and staff in place.
Although there was optimism that Mike Vrabel would turn things around, there were no expectations that it would happen as quickly as it did.
So when they inevitably went on a 10-game winning streak, which helped secure the AFC East for the first time since the 2019 season and eventually took them to the Super Bowl, it sent shockwaves across the league that their former rivals were unprepared for.
Although they were likely happy to see New England unable to overcome the Seahawks in that game, it was clear that they were only a few pieces away from contending again this fall, and one of the biggest upgrades was predicted to be their receiving corps.
They improved the group by signing Romeo Doubs in free agency and just put them over the top with a trade for AJ Brown. That's a nightmare scenario for every AFC team wishing Drake Maye wouldn't have the luxury of a game-changing receiver, and now, hearing from Brown's new teammates, the league's worst fear about what the Patriots can be this fall is officially confirmed.
Kevin Byard just hyped up AJ Brown's arrival to the Patriots to a new level
After a minicamp practice earlier in the week, plenty of Patriots players spoke about Brown's first weeks with the team and couldn't be more excited about what he can bring to the offense.
One of his newest teammates was also a former teammate, Kevin Byard III, who has spoken highly of Brown since he arrived. In fact, he confirmed to Patriots rivals that he is still the same receiver he was with the Eagles, and that he will be a "nightmare" for opposing defenses in 2026.
"Same guy to go up and make plays one-on-one. A nightmare for defenses.”
It would be fair to assume that before this quote, Patriots' rivals were well aware that Brown was going to boost the offense to a whole new level, but hearing it from someone as respected as Byard surely makes it a more uncomfortable reality.
That's exactly what the team needs after a season that ended in a Super Bowl, and they're now being overlooked and underrecognized for what they can accomplish this upcoming season. Most analysts already predict they'll miss the playoffs due to a tough schedule, but they've made the kind of roster moves that should ensure that doesn't happen.
Brown is near the top of that list, and so is Byard, both of whom have proven to be legitimate weapons in their careers and could be the biggest difference-makers for this team's fate.
That doesn't even include the addition of Alijah Vera-Tucker on the offensive line, or Reggie Gilliam to the fullback room, or (hopefully) Gabe Jacas to the edge. This team appears more than capable of having another Super Bowl run, and knowing that Maye will have a player like Brown on his side is certainly what nightmares are made of for everyone outside New England.
