The New England Patriots are trying their best to build on their Super Bowl season in free agency and added a veteran leader to their secondary in Kevin Byard. The Patriots inked Byard to a one-year deal worth $9 million and the 32-year-old safety is stoked to be joining the reigning AFC champs.

After signing with the Patriots, Byard revealed that the Patriots were at the top of his list in free agency. The feeling was clearly mutual as he's now a Patriot and couldn't stop singing their praises during the introductory press conference.

“This was my top destination to go to," Byard said. "The culture of this team, this organization, it’s obviously a winning culture. I think the pieces that they have in place… It makes it attractive for any free agent to wanna come here.”

Kevin Byard says Patriots culture drew him in immediately

It makes sense that the Patriots would appeal to Byard. He played for Mike Vrabel in Tennessee when Vrabel was the head coach of the Titans, so a reunion made sense for both sides, even though it's with a new team.

It's clear that Byard saw the culture shift this Patriots squad had under Vrabel, and he knows what kind of coach Vrabel can be. Byard's comments show that he knows what the Patriots are all about and wants to be part of it.

Byard has proven himself to be a great veteran leader and a positive presence to have in the locker room. He's a ball hawk, indicated by his seven interceptions he hauled in during the 2025 season, and is someone the Patriots really hope can pack a punch in their secondary.

Byard has bounced around in recent years, but spent the first eight years of his career in Tennessee after the Titans drafted him in the third round. He was traded to the Eagles during the 2023 season and then signed a two-year deal with the Bears in 2024.

Now he's off to his fourth team and is hoping that he can help the Patriots get back to the Super Bowl.
