The New England Patriots quietly built one of the best secondaries in the league in the 2025 season, and they have decided to make one of their strengths even better by handing out a very solid contract to Chicago Bears free agent Kevin Byard.

Byard, who was a First Team All-Pro despite being in his 10th season at age 32, is signing a one-year deal with the Patriots worth $9 million per season. This deal keeps the secondary elite as New England will try to get back on the horse and push for another AFC Championship.

Byard has a pst history with Vrabel, as his best seasons in the NFL came as one of the lynchpins of his defense with the Tennessee Titans. Vrabel is trusting that Byard will once again be able to replicate his performance in 2026, and history suggests he may be proven right.

Patriots sign Bears safety Kevin Byard on one-year deal

Byard was one of the few pre-Vrabel Titans who managed to become a long-term contributor in Tennessee, as the Middle Tennessee State product was named a first-team All-Pro performer twice in eight seasons. After his career took a downturn following a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Bears got Byard back on track.

In his lone season under Dennis Allen, Byard led the NFL with seven interceptions, making his third All-Pro team. The fact that New England was able to bring him to town on a one-year deal in which he doesn't even hit eight figures is a tremendous bit of business from this front office.

Even though this signing might make it more difficult to bring back safety Jaylinn Hawkins, it will be incredibly hard to throw on a secondary led by a top-five cornerback in Christian Gonzalez, one of the best CB2s in the game in Carlton Davis, and a ballhawk like Byard.

Vrabel has done a good job of figuring out which of his past Titans connections are essential for building a winner, and with Byard standing out as one of the last true centerfield safeties, his fit in this defense almost makes too much sense.
