Expectations were high for the Patriots going into free agency this year, and although they didn't make as big a splash as they did in 2025, they still signed some standout talent that will make their roster better this fall.
One of those players is versatile offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker, who is expected to hold down the left guard role next season. But his injury history has many concerned about his durability and how it could impact the offense, especially since he will start in a crucial position on the offensive line.
It's gotten to the point of even Zoltán Buday of Pro Football Focus labeling the Patriots' decision to sign the former first-round pick as his least favorite move for the team this offseason, primarily due to his injury history.
"When he is on the field, Vera-Tucker is among the better guards in the NFL. However, what makes this move, and this size of a contract, very risky is that he hasn't been on the field recently. The USC product missed the entire 2025 season and has played just 1,348 snaps over the past four seasons, which ranks only 73rd among guards over that span."
This inevitably puts a lot of pressure on Vera-Tucker to prove the doubters wrong, and hopefully, he does that for New England and becomes their next superstar lineman.
Lack of excitement around Alijah Vera-Tucker signing means the lineman has a lot to prove with the Patriots
When it was announced that the Patriots were signing Vera-Tucker to a three-year contract, there were mixed reactions from analysts and fans alike. Most were thrilled that they addressed the offensive line as soon as they did, especially since they decided that Jared Wilson was going to move to center.
But others immediately brought up his injury history, since three of his four NFL seasons ended due to serious injuries.
It's certainly a fair concern, and we won't know about his durability until he gets on the field for his new team. But it's important to remember that he was a first-round pick in 2021, and despite his injury history, most analysts still say that he is a very talented player and one of the best guards in the league when he's on the field.
Given what's being said about him and the doubts being cast, it's hard to imagine that it won't be the foundation for fueling the start of his tenure in Foxboro. Vera-Tucker is well aware of what's being said, and he's made it clear that he intends to play as hard as he can for the Patriots.
Obviously, injuries happen, and it's impossible to control them. But Vera-Tucker isn't focused on what's happened in the past, and that's exactly the mindset that fans should be excited to hear.
The concerns are valid, and it's unlikely that we'll stop hearing about them throughout his career with the Patriots. However, there is a lot to be excited about with Vera-Tucker on the team, especially after seeing how much the offensive line struggled in the offensive line. He inevitably adds another anchor that should make the group better and lays the groundwork for optimism about the state of the offense in 2026.
