There was a lot of hope that the New England Patriots would make a big splash at the start of free agency this offseason, only to make two signings on the first day of the legal tampering period and wait to announce one of their bigger signings until late Monday night.
That's when it was revealed they had stolen versatile offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker from the Giants, who reportedly were nearing a deal until they reached an impasse. Given his flexibility at the position, playing tackle and guard throughout his four years in New York, he fits exactly what the Patriots need in 2026.
But his injury history has many concerned about how it could ultimately affect the state of the offense, especially since they are likely planning to use him at left guard, while moving the 2025 starter, Jared Wilson, to center.
And while those concerns are certainly valid, Jets' expert Justin Fried of The Jet Press provided a sensible and optimistic outlook of Vera-Tucker that Patriots fans should remember when reflecting on Mike Vrabel and Co's decision to sign him
The Jets are not happy about losing Alijah Vera-Tucker, especially to the Patriots
While assessing the Jets' potential free-agent losses this offseason, Fried spoke highly of Vera-Tucker and what he could bring to his next team, noting that many around the league are interested in signing the 25-year-old.
While he acknowledged his injury history, Fried also made it clear that Vera-Tucker was New York's best offensive lineman since he was drafted in the first round in 2021, and his high upside will be worth the risk.
"When healthy, Vera-Tucker has arguably been the Jets’ best offensive lineman, offering valuable versatility with the ability to play both guard and tackle, though he is clearly at his best on the interior.
His injury history will understandably give some teams pause, but in a league desperate for quality offensive line play, Vera-Tucker is still likely to be one of the more intriguing options on the market. The Jets have interest in bringing him back, but they will not be alone, as he profiles as a high-risk, high-reward addition for any team looking to upgrade its guard room."

Knowing that not only did the Patriots steal Vera-Tucker away from the Giants, but they also took a good player away from the Jets makes the whole ordeal all the more satisfying.
Perhaps the most satisfying, however, is knowing that they added a player who could be a Pro Bowler at his position, as long as he avoids another injury. Hopefully, that will be the case once he gets to New England, and this signing will look even better.
Clearly, Vrabel and Eliot Wolf aren't overly concerned about the risks, as they are well aware of Vera-Tucker's career. It should be considered an underrated signing, especially if he doesn't miss a game in 2026, and that will prove Fried's comments to be even more accurate.
