The Patriots were supposed to enter the 2026 offseason on a high after completing an extraordinarily successful season that culminated in a Super Bowl appearance against the Seahawks. It was a year defined by Mike Vrabel's arrival as head coach and the roster's determination to defy the odds and become a competitive team once again.
And although the Championship loss was devastating, especially given how it transpired, they couldn't have asked for a better season, considering it had been five years since they last finished with a winning record.
Unfortunately, the highs they should have been riding into the spring were cut short when a new scandal involving Vrabel and NFL insider Dianna Russini was revealed. It dominated headlines throughout free agency and into the draft, becoming the hottest topic surrounding the team.
It was the worst-case scenario for the Patriots, and because it could still become a distraction throughout the summer and into the regular season, plenty of former players have expressed their opinions on how to avoid that, with the latest being Rob Gronkowski.
His comments were more words of advice to Vrabel on how to approach the next several months, and although his point is simple, it will surely be effective.
Rob Gronkowski knows exactly how Mike Vrabel can keep the headlines at bay during the Patriots' 2026 season
While speaking to Fox News Digital this past week, Gronkowski was (of course) asked about Vrabel's ongoing controversy, and whether he had anything to say about how the head coach could prevent it from becoming a major distraction during a very telling season.
Gronk got straight to the point with a simple response, and it's difficult to argue that he's wrong.
"It’s as easy as this: win. You win. You come together as a team. You work together, you work your butt off."
Because winning has long been expected from Patriots fans since the start of the dynasty, there's a lot of truth in Gronk's comments about how winning could be an easy way to distract from the distraction of gossip and drama stemming from Vrabel's personal life.
They have a tough schedule ahead of them, and early projections don't have the Patriots being nearly as successful as they were in 2025, but they appear more than capable of continuing their rise in the league, and if they win more, it would certainly help Vrabel's case if anything else is revealed.
Gronkowski doubled down on his advice, placing greater emphasis on accountability while reiterating that winning helps a lot in the NFL. If Vrabel can lead the Patriots to even more success, it could become the team's sole focus rather than any scandal.
"Everyone has to show that they’re accountable during training camp. That they’re accountable during the preseason. Once the regular season comes, you gotta win, baby.
If you win, it solves all problems. It really does. It’s crazy how winning in the NFL, it truly does and you’re good to go there. You gotta win, baby."
It won't be easy, and while Gronkowski is spot on, it's also under the assumption that nothing more controversial will be revealed about Vrabel and Russini's alleged relationship. The rumor mill has been quiet as of late, but there's a chance that changes.
Hopefully, for all parties involved, even Patriots fans, nothing more will be made public, and the situation can be left in the past. Focusing on football from here on out is exactly what we need, and it would be great if we could go the rest of the year without any more scandals, since the Patriots have had more than their fair share over the years.
