At the start of training camp, the Patriots' defensive line, more specifically the edge rushers, are expected to be a primary focus of reporters and fans due to the lack of depth in the role and the unknown future of rookie Gabe Jacas.
It is widely considered their weakest position group on the team, and a big reason for that is not only the lack of star power, but the decision not to re-sign one of their top performers from the 2025 season, K'Lavon Chaisson.
Instead, the 26-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Commanders, which the Patriots didn't want to match, despite the impressive year Chaisson had. He was one of their top defenders throughout the season and fell only behind Harold Landry in sacks, as he recorded 7.5 sacks in 16 games.
Given that he was playing on a one-year prove-it deal and he certainly did that, fans hoped it would be enough to keep the young rising star around for a few more years. But the higher-ups didn't have the same vision, and now the pass rush remains a vulnerable part of the defense ahead of an already predicted difficult schedule.
Making matters worse is the latest prediction about Chaisson's first season in Washington, as he lands on the list of pass rushers on the verge of a breakout season, which would only make their decision to let him walk in free agency a bigger mistake.

Among the seven most likely edge rushers to rise to the occasion this fall, Chaisson is near the top of the list, particularly due to his 2025 success and the environment he's going to be part of with the Commanders.
Not only will he have a defensive-minded head coach in Dan Quinn, which can work to his benefit, but he is also going to be paired with Odafe Oweh to take on opposing quarterbacks, and the best part of that is going to be the opportunities Chaisson will have on game day.
Because Oweh is projected to be their primary pass rusher, he will garner the most attention from opponents. That creates a massive window for Chaisson to take advantage of one-on-one matchups, which is far more favorable for his performance, and that could help him continue his rise in the league.
That's a massive gut punch to the Patriots, who have already been widely criticized for not retaining him in free agency and opting to sign Dre'Mont Jones instead. Although the newcomer could surprise everyone and perform at a high level, just as Chaisson did in 2025, there isn't much optimism that he will fit what the defense needs.
Fortunately, during the spring, he was already making a good impression on his new teammates and coaches, as he was putting in extra work in preparation for what should be a good season.
If that can continue during training camp and into the preseason, surely there will be more excitement about what Jones can do for the defense, and maybe he will help everyone move on from what Chaisson is doing elsewhere.
