At this stage of the Patriots' offseason, it is beyond clear what upgrades they still need to make with their roster, and that should be addressed before the team returns for training camp later next month.
At the top of the list of priorities should be pass rusher, as that is arguably the weakest group on the team, especially since rookie Gabe Jacas was not present for OTAs or minicamp, and questions continue to swirl about what his future might look like in New England.
There was a lot of excitement about the linebacker when he was drafted, but he remains unsigned heading into mid-June, and the latest speculation about what's going on doesn't sound too promising. In fact, it's prompting far more concerns than anything else, making the pass-rushing group look even more vulnerable than they should be.
Because Harold Landry has been absent, Dre'Mont Jones has been impressing his coaches in his place. He's expected to take over the role that K'Lavon Chaisson held in 2025, and Jacas was supposed to be alongside him.
The problem is that we're no closer to knowing what's going on with the rookie and whether he will be with the Patriots any time soon. Instead, we're hearing just whispers of what might be happening, as ESPN's Mike Reiss reports the latest rumors of how the team got to this point.
New rumors suggest there's no end in sight for Gabe Jacas' absence from the Patriots
In his weekly rundown of the latest happenings surrounding the Patriots, Reiss wrote in length about Jacas and what he's been hearing about the ongoing situation.
He mentioned that Jacas underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee this offseason after suffering a hamstring injury during the pre-draft process, but sources indicated that neither the Patriots nor two other teams gave him a passing grade on his physical ahead of the draft.
Reiss noted questions about whether something happened after the procedure to keep him off the field, but there is some speculation that it's the financial terms of his rookie contract that are preventing a deal from being agreed upon, with one executive suggesting it all might come down to his medicals.
Another source suggested it has more to do with the language of his contract, and until that's fixed, we might not see Jacas on the practice field.
"His absence is tied, in part, to not being given a standard "participation agreement" from the Patriots, according to a source. Most draft picks receive such an agreement, which states that if they were to sustain an injury prior to signing their first NFL contract, the team would still be obligated to sign him to a contract based on the slot he was drafted."
No matter what it is, it's clear that there are more obstacles in the way of getting a deal done than anyone would hope for, and it's far from what a rookie needs to be experiencing this early in his career, especially on a team that desperately needs his production on game day.
The hope is that whatever is preventing a contract from being signed will be dealt with sooner rather than later, as the longer this goes on, the worse it gets not only for the Patriots, but for Jacas, too.
That should be all the more reason for Eliot Wolf and Co. to handle this with more urgency than what we've seen thus far, and it would be ideal to see Jacas join the team for training camp later next month. Otherwise, there will be far more reasons to be concerned than there are now.
