The Patriots' 2025 season was predicted to be far from what they managed to accomplish, with most analysts believing they would improve under Mike Vrabel's leadership and expecting a second-year jump from Drake Maye, but not enough to win their division, let alone make the playoffs.

Obviously, they were much more successful and made it all the way to the Super Bowl, and a big reason for that was their impressive defense and the under-the-radar contributors that made those efforts possible.

Among the most overlooked players was K'Lavon Chaisson, who signed a one-year prove-it deal last offseason and overdelivered by recording the best statistical season of his career.

It warranted a new contract from the Patriots, but they chose to move on and instead sign Dre'Mont Jones, another mostly unproven defender who many fans were not exactly thrilled about joining the roster.

A lot of it came down to whether he was an upgrade over Chaisson, which he arguably isn't, so the start of his New England tenure is already under scrutiny. However, the way Jones has started at OTAs and minicamp has made quite an impression on his new coaches, to the point that he's a name to watch once they return for training camp next month.

He's been so good that he might even be on the radar to be named a captain.

Dre'Mont Jones is asserting himself as somewhat of a leader for the Patriots' defense already

Despite the general criticism of his signing, Jones has been determined to get on the right path, not that he's part of the Patriots.

He's walking into a big opportunity to earn a major role on the defense, particularly with Chaisson no longer on the team, and has seemingly taken that seriously throughout the spring.

Linebackers coach Mike Smith had a lot to say about him during minicamp, even going as far as comparing him to Harold Landry III, while also emphasizing how he's motivating his new teammates to keep up with what he's doing, which is exactly what the most concerned fans need to hear.

“(Jones) is tough, he’s physical, he’s a good kid. He’s a student of the game. He plays multiple positions. The more you can do in this league, the more valuable you’re going to be. He’s stand-up, he’s got his hand in the ground. (Media can’t) be here at a bunch of practices, but man, he’s got a motor now and it’s contagious.”

Jones has taken the opportunity and run with it despite what he's likely heard from all the naysayers, and although he still has to show what he can do on game day to shut down the concerns entirely, he's clearly doing all the right things so far.

He's taking advantage of his veteran experience and also learning from Landry to help make a leadership duo, which his teammates are now feeding off of.

Smith couldn't stop raving about what he's seen from both of them, and maybe had the quote of the spring with how he described what Jones has accomplished so far.

“He looks and he plays like a Patriot.”

There's nothing more you could want, and hopefully, he can continue to impress throughout training camp and the regular season. Based on what we know, there's no reason to believe he can't, and that's an exciting development for a player who was widely overlooked when he was initially signed.
