Over the last few years, despite their massive setbacks, the Patriots have become a team almost synonymous with historic contracts for free agents they've brought in, and the 2026 season is already off to a similar start.
Although free agency has been fairly slow in New England so far, they did make a massive signing late on Monday when they announced they were bringing in versatile offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker, who spent the last four seasons with the Jets.
He's already considered a risky signing, given his injury history. However, he was a first-round draft pick in 2021 and has high upside that many experts already say makes him a tremendous signing for the Mike Vrabel regime.
And to top it all off, the details of his contract make it all a pretty historic move, mainly due to the in-game incentives he can earn.
The per-game bonuses are technically guaranteed in 2026, but he still has to dress each week to earn them. A total of $12.75 million over three years tied to being active.

Although it's likely his contract was written that way because of his injury history, it's still significant that the Patriots are willing to pay that much for a player who could become an instrumental part of their team moving forward.
Eliot Wolf isn't shying away from handing out big-money contracts to players with a lot of potential
Given their needs on the offensive line, it makes sense that one of the Patriots' earliest signings is for a versatile player who can be lined up at tackle or guard.
Vrabel and Wolf have already shared their plan to move Jared Wilson to center, after he started at left guard as a rookie last season, which creates a role for Vera-Tucker to step right into, where he is known for thriving most.
On top of that, he's reuniting with his former teammate Morgan Moses, who will continue to be the team's starting right tackle, who has had nothing but good things to say about Vera-Tucker.
Although he might not be the player most analysts had on their big board for the Patriots to sign, it looks like they made the right decision to bring him in, even more so since they managed to whisk him away from the Giants, and now it looks like they have a solid starting group for the 2026 season.
The focus will now shift to adding more depth at all positions.
