It's hard to believe that the Patriots are just days away from their 2026 season opener against the Seahawks in a Super Bowl LX rematch, not just because the offseason feels like it went by in the blink of an eye, but because they still haven't reached an agreement on a contract extension with Christian Gonzalez.
It's a matter that should have been addressed months ago to avoid distracting the team and a potential holdout by the cornerback, especially given their first four games of the season.
It would be an absolute disaster if Gonzalez isn't on the field, and that's a risk they're apparently willing to take at this point. They're already considered the underdogs in almost every one of the matchups in September, which would surely increase if their best defensive player doesn't suit up.
With just three days until they're kicking off the first game of the season in Seattle, the higher-ups in Foxboro are in a brutal time crunch that they can only blame themselves for. They still have time to get a deal done before the team heads off to the West Coast, and hopefully they do.
If not, we could be looking at the biggest mistake the franchise has made since giving Tom Brady every reason to walk out the door and win a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers six years ago.
The Patriots are headed for an absolute disaster unless they get the Christian Gonzalez drama solved ASAP
Although comparing Brady and Gonzalez might sound ridiculous to some, and it's not to say they're equally important to the team, the cornerback has become an anchor of their defense over the last three years, and his absence has proven to be devastating for the team.
We've seen it quite a bit since he was drafted in the first round in 2023; his rookie season ended abruptly due to an injury, and he's dealt with other setbacks in the two years since. It's made it abundantly apparent that he is crucial to their success, and it's a near guarantee that without him, they'll struggle mightily.
That's particularly true when looking at the Seahawks, as Gonzalez was arguably the sole reason that Sam Darnold wasn't able to run up the score and Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn't record a record number of yards throughout the game.
Had it not been for Gonzalez and his stellar protection of last season's Offensive Player of the Year, the Patriots would still be reeling from the embarrassment of their Super Bowl performance.
Because they haven't been able to reach an agreement on a well-earned contract extension over the past seven months, there's a good chance Seattle will be able to have that kind of night on Wednesday if Gonzalez decides to hold out. It wouldn't be the first time a player has done that in New England, and probably won't be the last.
It's an unfortunate yet typically understandable part of the NFL that teams have to prepare for, and it's looking increasingly likely that Gonzalez might be headed in that direction.
That's the kind of mistake fans would argue is unforgivable, given how important it is for the Patriots to continue their ascent and become an even more competitive, legitimate team after falling to the bottom of the league post-Brady.
Given how impactful he is for the Patriots on and off the field, the hope is that Eliot Wolf and Co. will work with the most urgency they have all offseason to get a deal done before the team leaves this week, ensuring that not only is it not a distraction for the entire team, but also that Gonzalez will play on Wednesday night.
It shouldn't have gotten to this point, and the higher-ups should be embarrassed that it has. The only way to make it right is to get the deal done before the season opener; otherwise, they won't hear the end of it, and rightfully so.
