Over the past week, most of the news surrounding the Patriots has focused on their impending roster cuts and who they might pick up from the waiver wire and free agency, rather than consistently focusing on Christian Gonzalez's looming contract extension.
That has been a big part of the 2026 offseason, despite the fact that the cornerback has done more than enough to earn a substantial new contract. It should've been an easy thing to negotiate and get put away before the regular season, but in pure Patriots fashion, it has been far from that.
Now that we're less than two weeks from their Week 1 Super Bowl rematch with the Seahawks, getting Gonzalez under contract is becoming even more crucial.
Although he's been participating in training camp and that isn't expected to change, there's a chance he could hold out if negotiations go south, which would be a disaster for this defense. It would be the worst-case scenario, especially after roster cuts, which saw a few of their best depth cornerbacks released.
Even more concerning is the lack of updates from the Patriots, with Mike Vrabel having nothing to add to the conversation as of Monday morning. But later that day, Gonzalez's trainer spoke with 98.5 the Sports Hub's Felger and Mazz and shared a promising update that echoes how fans have been feeling throughout the offseason.
Even those closest to Christian Gonzalez want to see an extension done ASAP
While speaking to the radio hosts, Gonzalez's trainer, known as Coach Flight, shared a mostly optimistic message about the cornerback's future in New England and, amid it all, expressed his hope that the Patriots will do the right thing.
That's exactly what fans have been asking for, since Gonzalez has proven to be a vital part of their defense, and hopefully, they'll follow through.
"He wants to be there...he's fell in love with the place. He wants to be there for however many years they agree to an extension...I just hope they do right by him."
First, it's good to hear that Gonzalez's mindset about playing for the Patriots hasn't changed, even though negotiations have stalled. It wouldn't have been surprising to hear that he wouldn't mind going to another team, as some have speculated a trade is coming.
Instead, Coach Flight emphasized throughout the interview that the Pro Bowler wants to stay in New England as long as possible and hopes to secure a contract that will make that happen.
Beyond that, hearing Flight say that he hopes the team will "do right by him" sounds like something straight out of a Patriots fan's mouth, as that has been the sentiment all offseason. They haven't had the luxury of drafting a player who would go on to become a superstar, so it's mind-boggling that they are taking so long to reach a deal with an obvious game-changer.
There's no reason they shouldn't want to pay him what he's worth, which looks like being the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. Gonzalez has shown he is a force on the field and has become a more vocal leader over the past year, so this should've been something done a long time ago.
Hopefully, it's only a matter of time before an extension is announced, especially with the season right around the corner. The front office can't risk this becoming a distraction or having Gonzalez off the field for a game or more, so they need to move more urgently to get this done.
