One of the biggest goals of the Patriots' 2026 offseason was to get superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez under contract for the foreseeable future, as this was his first year eligible for an extension.
They already picked up his fifth-year option, so he will stick with the team through 2027, but beyond that, it was time for the team to reward him for his hard work and make him the highest-paid cornerback in the league.
Given how instrumental he has been to their defensive success since he was drafted in 2023, particularly against the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, the negotiation should've been an easy process at the start of the offseason.
Instead, with less than a week until their season opener, Gonzalez still hasn't agreed to a new deal, and recent reports and rumors suggest it might not happen before Week 1.
It's a disastrous scenario that the higher-ups in Foxboro should have long avoided, and it's not sitting well with Patriots legends, who are weighing in on the situation, with Rodney Harrison the latest.
The Patriots are starting to get harsh criticism for their handling of Christian Gonzalez's extension
While speaking to MassLive.com this past week, the 2-time Super Bowl Champion had a lot to say about his former team not reaching an agreement yet with Gonzalez and put it simply that it "sends a terrible message" to not only the Patriots roster, but those who might want to play there in the future.
“If you don’t send a message now, or if you let Christian out of here, or make him play on the current deal, that sends a terrible message. The last thing you want is a negative mark like that, to have a young player like Christian Gonzalez and not pay him.
If I’m a free agent with the Buffalo Bills or the Dallas Cowboys, I’m not going to the Patriots. [Expletive], they won’t pay Christian Gonzalez. He showed the world how good he was.”
That's exactly the opposite of what the Patriots should want at this stage of their rebuild, especially since Bill Belichick was long known for not paying players what they were worth. Mike Vrabel shouldn't want to earn that reputation any time soon.
Paying Gonzalez should have been the easiest decision ever because he has long proven just how valuable he is to their success. So rewarding him with a market-setting contract shouldn't be a drawn-out conversation.
It's only risking a potential holdout and putting the team in a situation they can't recover from because no other cornerback on the team is as good as Gonzalez is. And the first month of their season is going to be brutal, and it will only be worse without him on the field.
On top of it all, a looming extension is a massive distraction that will remain a hot topic throughout the season, and given the successful year they're coming off of, and an offseason filled with controversy, they don't need to give the media or opposing fans any more ammunition to make this season even more difficult.
They're running out of time, which should force them to work with a sense of urgency, and get Gonzalez under contract before next Wednesday.
