For the first time in what feels like forever, the Patriots face the challenge of a deeply talented wide receiver room and the unfortunate reality of having to cut the group down to at most seven players.
Because we know players like A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs will make the roster no matter what, and there is plenty of reason to believe the same can be said about DeMario Douglas and Mack Hollins, the final spots are more up in the air, especially with rumors flying about potentially trading Kayshon Boutte.
The 24-year-old is set to play on the final year of his rookie contract in 2026, and because there hasn't been anything said about whether the Patriots want to extend him any time soon, rumors have suggested they want to trade him to receive something in return rather than watch him leave in free agency for nothing.
But the connection with Drake Maye is clear, as Boutte has consistently been his No. 1 option at training camp and continues to have the best play of the day. So the Patriots are in a tough spot in how to proceed.
It certainly doesn't help that a new rumor claims Boutte requested a trade as early as April, citing the clear future of the receiving corps and realizing he was not going to become the WR2 he believes he could be.
He has now changed his tune, slightly, emphasizing his desire to stay in New England, but comments from Mike Vrabel make it clear that's far from a guarantee at this stage of the offseason.
Kayshon Boutte's career feels the most uncertain it has been all offseason
From the first time that Maye and Boutte connected on the field during the 2024 season, their chemistry has blossomed into one that quarterbacks dream of.
Despite not being considered the WR1 over the last two years, Boutte has played like one and has proven he can be a reliable option for his quarterback, as we saw often during the postseason on the way to last year's Super Bowl.
That would presumably be enough to show the Patriots how valuable Boutte is to this offense, especially this year, when Romeo Doubs has not flourished as they were probably hoping, and that becomes more apparent with each practice.
But Vrabel's reluctance to state that he's not up for a trade, even going so far as to emphasize how valuable trades for draft capital or other players are, makes it easy to assume that Boutte is far from safe and they're ready to trade him for the right price.
By all accounts, they haven't received the right kind of offer to move him, and they'd be foolish to trade him for what they have reportedly received in offers, a fifth-round pick. That does nothing for the roster in the draft and would further damage the offense, which is far from what they need to do for Maye at this stage.
On top of it all, Boutte is ready to use this contract year as motivation to prove the ongoing cynicism about his future wrong. He has already risen to stardom over the past year, especially, and now that he has another chip on his shoulder, the Patriots may see his best performance yet this fall.
That could help their trade hopes, or it could put their offense over the top on the way to another Super Bowl.
Earning a new contract is a leading motivator for Boutte's 2026 performance
Boutte said as much to reporters after practice earlier this week, stating he wants the 2026 season to be his best yet, knowing he's fighting for an extension with the Patriots or a trade and a new contract with a new team.

From what we've seen from him over the past week at training camp, it's clear that whatever he's using as motivation is working, and he's giving Maye and Wolf a difficult decision to make with the preseason right around the corner.
Good receivers aren't easy to come by, and the fact that the Patriots are in a position of potentially having too many is a problem they should welcome. If they want to surround their franchise quarterback with the best possible roster, keeping Boutte is the only thing that makes sense.
That is even more true if Doubs and second-year receiver Kyle Williams continue to fall behind their teammates moving forward. Boutte provides a level of reliability that some of the others don't, and that will matter more than anything on game day, as they hope to reach the postseason once again.
Messing with what Maye is comfortable with would be a disaster, so it's pretty easy to see that keeping Boutte makes the most sense, and getting everything sorted out behind the scenes so this doesn't remain a distraction needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.
