Mike Vrabel just made Kayshon Boutte trade rumors impossible to ignore

For most of the offseason, rumors have swirled about the Patriots likely deciding to trade wide receiver Kayshon Boutte ahead of the final year of his rookie contract. The chatter intensified once the trade for A.J. Brown became official, as now the receiving corps would be led by the veteran and free agent addition Romeo Doubs.

The problem is that Boutte has become an integral part of the offense over the last two years, especially in 2025, when he hauled in some of the most impressive catches of the season, which put him on the radar across the NFL.

That would seem like enough to keep him around, particularly since he has improved every season since he was drafted, but there is a growing consensus that he has become the odd man out in the wide receiver room, and because he is considered to have the most trade value, they are likely willing to move him before the season starts.

Based on what we've seen at training camp thus far, it's clear those plans aren't imminent, as Boutte has been Drake Maye's favorite target, even over Brown.

However, Mike Vrabel's latest comments on the matter don't provide much assurance that Boutte is safe from being traded. In fact, many feel the head coach may have inadvertently confirmed he won't be on the team for much longer.

While speaking to reporters ahead of Monday's walkthrough, Vrabel spoke about the rumors surrounding Boutte and had nothing but good things to say about the receiver.

While that's not unexpected, many fans don't feel good about what the coach had to say, as it could be seen as a way to hype up Boutte to teams that might be interested, especially since he didn't explicitly say that he is not on the trade block.

Despite being a sixth-round pick in 2023 and the low expectations that come with players drafted that low, Boutte has grown exceptionally and has proven exactly why he was once considered a first-round prospect.

Although he might not fill the WR1 role in New England, he has shown he can be a legitimate threat on the field and be a reliable part of Maye's offense. That's not something easy to find, and that kind of receiver has eluded the Patriots for far too long, which should be motivation to keep him around.

Obviously, if they have no plans to extend him beyond the 2026 season, then they might be right to move on now rather than watch him walk in free agency for nothing next spring. That would at least give them some kind of return, but it's still hard to overlook the impact his absence would have on Maye's performance.

Regardless, this storyline isn't going away any time soon, since Vrabel couldn't or wouldn't refute the claim that Boutte is on the trade block. So we'll have to wait until there is a definitive statement, whether it's ending the rumors or outright trading him, before getting too comfortable about what the future holds.
