The rumors surrounding the immediate and long-term future of wide receiver Kayshon Boutte have been loud this offseason, with most analysts believing that the Patriots will send him to a new team for the 2026 season sooner rather than later.
The additions of Romeo Doubs in free agency and eventually A.J. Brown via trade have presumably made Boutte the odd man out, despite having become a reliable weapon for Drake Maye to work with over the last two years.
That was apparent particularly last year, and he was projected to continue climbing the depth chart this summer.
Although Brown and Doubs have now leapfrogged him, it hasn't stopped Boutte from remaining Maye's top option during training camp so far. In fact, the 24-year-old has consistently been the highlight of practice, and that feels like a purposeful move by the quarterback.

Besides being comfortable with each other now that they're going into Year 3 together, it's clear that Maye trusts Boutte can make a play, even when he's lined up against their best defensive secondary, and that should hold a lot more weight in the eyes of the Patriots' higher-ups who are likely still looking for a team to trade him to.
That could create a lot of problems offensively; however, if we continue to see this kind of performance from the duo, with Maye prioritizing plays to Boutte, they'll need to rethink that decision or risk doing a lot of harm to their offense's goal this fall.
Drake Maye clearly doesn't want to see Kayshon Boutte leave the Patriots any time soon
After unexpectedly reaching the Super Bowl during a season that had been widely overlooked before it began, the Patriots are back to being the hunted and have every reason to keep the most consistent and productive players on their roster.
That makes it easy to suggest that Boutte stay in New England for the 2026 season, and maybe even beyond that. He's about to play on the final year of his rookie contract and is almost certainly looking for an extension, and if his connection with Maye continues on the path it's been on, then there's no reason not to give him a new contract.
It's clearly important to build a solid team around Maye at this stage in his career, and getting rid of a player like Boutte, who has been nothing but an obvious help on game day, would be a massive mistake, not to mention a disaster if all they get in return is a fifth-round pick.
How many late-round selections do they need? And for the longest time, the Patriots have needed an upgraded receiving corps, and now that they finally have a deep room, they're willing to dismantle it?
That doesn't make much sense, and it makes even less sense given that they finally have the franchise quarterback they have been longing for since Tom Brady left after the 2019 season. And part of the reason he left was that Bill Belichick seemingly refused to improve the wide receiver room.
It's not a mistake that Mike Vrabel and Co. should replicate ever, but especially this early in Maye's career. So trading Boutte could do a lot of damage to his performance, particularly given that Doubs has yet to make a significant impact at practice and Kyle Williams is already looking like a potential cut ahead of his second season.
If that continues, trading Boutte makes even less sense, and it might be fair to assume that Maye is purposely trying to show just how important he is so far in training camp. It's something they should take seriously before moving Boutte just for the sake of moving him.
