With so many wide receivers on the Patriots' current roster, the competition for who will ultimately make up the depth behind A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs has been a major debate since the start of training camp. That is especially true when it comes to Kayshon Boutte, who has outshined his teammates yet is still part of the loudest trade chatter.
Most analysts feel it would be best to keep the fourth-year playmaker on the team, given how he has only improved every year and his chemistry with Drake Maye is clear, so assuming he does stay, the rest of the receivers are actively competing for the remaining roles.
Typically, the Patriots keep six receivers on the roster, leaving Efton Chism, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, and Kyle Williams to battle for the presumed final three spots.
Based on what we've seen at training camp so far and according to most reports, Williams has looked like the odd man out, with many believing he could be on the chopping block despite being drafted just last year.
His rookie season wasn't what anyone expected, but Williams did have some standout moments showcasing his speed and playmaking ability, so we know he has the tools to be an integral part of the offense.
The problem is we haven't seen that much this summer, and it's started to become worrisome, unless you talk to Mike Vrabel, who emphasized just how important the 23-year-old will be for the team this season.

Contrary to everything we've heard from multiple reporters over the past few months, Vrabel is insistent that Williams will have a major role in the Patriots' offense this upcoming season.
He had nothing but good things to say about the receiver and hyped up his natural abilities as a reason that they will utilize him in the best way possible, shutting down nearly every concern about his development and future that reporters and fans have had in recent weeks.

This is a clear indictment of just how much the Patriots' coaching staff believes in the second-year receiver.
In the midst of all the negativity surrounding Williams this offseason, it's good to hear that what has been reported isn't as bad as it has seemed. Even if he hasn't been incredibly impressive so far, it hasn't changed what the coaches feel about where he is in his career and how he can help the offense on game day.
We still need to see it all come together, though, since Williams' teammates have strung together more standout days at practice than he has, even Douglas, who has been part of trade rumors this offseason, too, and that's not the best sign of what's to come.
However, Vrabel doesn't speak this passionately about just any old player, so he clearly believes in what Williams can do, and it will be up to the receiver to prove him right.
He had flashes of greatness as a rookie, with his speed being a legitimate difference-maker on more than one occasion, and that's clearly going to be the best trait for his future, and the Patriots can most certainly use that this season.
But he will need to do more than just be fast, and hopefully we will see more of that over the next few weeks and even into the preseason.
