It took just 1 practice for Kyle Williams to completely change his Patriots future

All eyes were inevitably going to be on new Patriots' wide receiver A.J. Brown at the start of and all throughout training camp. Because it has been so long since the offense had a pass catcher of his caliber, watching his development with Drake Maye was expected to be the main story of the summer, and so far, it has been.

Within that excitement, however, have been growing concerns about Kyle Williams, the second-year receiver who flashed greatness during his rookie season. He was projected to take on a bigger role in the receiving corps this year, even with the additions of Brown and Romeo Doubs, but we haven't seen that yet since training camp began.

Instead, rumors have begun to suggest that Williams might be the odd man out and could be on the chopping block ahead of Week 1. Although he hasn't had a fair shot to show what he can do, several of his teammates have outshined him, leading many to believe he has a steep hill to climb.

It's a narrative the 23-year-old has surely heard, and whether he used it as motivation is unclear. But what is apparent is his rise to relevancy nearly a week into practices, particularly with his performance on Thursday, which saw Williams grab two touchdowns from Maye.

Those are the kinds of practices he needs to string together to ensure he has a spot on the roster for the 2026 season. If he can do that and take the advice from Kayshon Boutte seriously, then there won't be room for rumors to continue.

Kyle Williams takes advantage of his opportunity to make a strong impression at Patriots training camp

A rough start to training camp is nothing new for any player in the NFL, no matter what position they play or what team they are part of.

That's particularly true for the Patriots, with Maye having a few wobbly practices, along with Brown and Doubs not looking all that impressive in their early Patriots debuts.

Williams fell into that category too, which only heightened the cut rumors this offseason, and given that Boutte has also been involved in chatter about his immediate and long-term Patriots future, it's unsurprising to hear that he offered Williams some advice on how to handle the scrutiny and the mindset to have going into practice.

Based on what we saw on Thursday, it appears that Williams took what Boutte had to say seriously and came extra prepared to make an impact on the field.

He's already shown his incredible speed during his rookie season, resulting in three touchdowns, one of which was a 72-yard reception, and that could be very useful going against some of the best teams in the league this fall.

It's an aspect of his game that sets him apart from his teammates and could be a significant factor the Patriots consider as they cut the roster late next month. He will just need to continue showing he can be consistent and build on that relationship with Maye to solidify his role moving forward, and hopefully he will.

The Patriots will need all the help they can get on offense after the amount of changes they have made this offseason. Williams can become an integral part of their success; he needs the opportunity to do so, and when he is, he needs to show exactly why he was drafted in the first place.
