The list of Patriots headed to free agency this offseason wasn't very long, nor was it filled with top talent most fans wanted to see return in 2026.

Among those they hoped would receive a new contract was Khyiris Tonga, who became the defense's best run-stopper and an anchor on the defensive line.

He signed a one-year prove-it deal last offseason, and he went above and beyond to show that he could serve a long-term role. The problem is that he impressed the rest of the league, too, prompting a team like the Chiefs to offer him a hefty contract that the Patriots were not willing to match.

It was immediately deemed a mistake for Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf, especially since the defense was the shining star of last year's roster, so it didn't make much sense to let him walk. And now hearing from the head coach, it proves even more that fans were right with how they felt about the situation.

The Patriots need to hope they don't immediately regret not re-signing Khyiris Tonga

While speaking to reporters ahead of OTAs on Wednesday, Vrabel spoke about Tonga and didn't hesitate to share that they wanted to bring him back, but he "had a better offer."

That offer came from a reigning AFC Super Bowl contender, the Chiefs, which could eventually come back to haunt New England when they play them on Monday Night Football in Week 15, and maybe even if they meet in the playoffs.

The hope is that they have enough talent on the defensive line that Tonga's absence won't be felt as strongly, and Vrabel seemed to hint that he has confidence in players like Leonard Taylor, Corey Durden, and Josh Farmer to step up into that role this upcoming season.

It's a big opening for the group of otherwise overlooked talent, and it could be the way they carve a role for themselves on the 2026 roster.

We saw some good things from them when the games mattered most last season, and now is their chance to prove they can be the next guy up, while also making up for the major blow to stopping the run that will inevitably come from Tonga's absence.
