Patriots' biggest free agency mistake might be even worse than initially thought

The Patriots' 2025 season went far better than anyone predicted, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance against the utterly impressive Seahawks, despite a widely overlooked roster lacking the projected star power needed to make a championship run. That made it even better to go into the offseason with a limited number of players set to hit free agency, but there were a few who most fans hoped to see re-signed.

One of those players was defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga, an under-the-radar addition last year, who became an integral part of their defensive identity. He was also invaluable to the offense as an extra offensive lineman, but he will now continue his career with the Chiefs instead.

It's one decision that could come back to haunt Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf, and hearing the details of what led to their failure to reach an agreement only makes the entire situation even worse, especially since Tonga made it clear he wanted to return for another season after the Super Bowl loss.

“Oh yeah, for sure. This was special, and to be able to come back, man, would be cool. But you know how this goes, so we’ll see. But yeah, just grateful for my time here.”

The Patriots were reportedly uninterested in re-signing Khyiris Tonga for one reason

According to Mark Daniels of MassLive, the Patriots and Tonga spoke during the playoffs and continued the contract talks at the Combine.

Everyone wanted to get a new deal done, but for some reason, they couldn't reach an agreement because the defender's price tag had risen due to his impressive 2025 performance. That made Vrabel and Wolf back out, inevitably leading to Tonga's departure.

Given how well he played for them during the season, it seemed like a no-brainer decision to bring him back, so it's frustrating to see him go.

That has immediately put a big need on the defensive line, since Tonga had made a significant impact in stopping the run and creating opportunities for his teammates. Now he will do that for Kansas City, and it could be a decision the Patriots learn to regret quickly.

So far, they have already added Dre'Mont Jones, Jesse Luketa, and KJ Britt in free agency, but they will definitely need to add more through the draft if they hope to maintain their production from last year or improve upon it.
