Among the list of things the Patriots need to accomplish during the 2026 offseason is determining how they want to plan for the immediate and long-term future of superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
The 2024 first-round pick is up for an extension this summer, or the team can pick up his fifth-year option, and although Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf have stated they plan to keep him around, there hasn't been much clarity about which direction they might go. Considering his new contract will reset the market for the position, it seems clear there's one path they should take: agreeing to an extension.
That's far from what opposing teams will want to see, as any team that currently has a CB1 needing a new contract or is looking to sign one will be on the hook for much more money after seeing Gonzalez's new salary.
But because of that, and the risk that comes with the Patriots holding off on getting a long-term deal done, it's crucial they reach that agreement sooner rather than later. Or they might be the ones who end up spending more money than they intended.
The Patriots need to prioritize signing Christian Gonzalez to extension this offseason
Being in the fortunate situation of having a first-round draft pick actually turn out the way you hoped and then some is not something the Patriots have lucked into for quite some time. As a matter of fact, they might be at the top of the record books with how many of their first-round picks have become clear busts over the last ten years.
That's not the case with Gonzalez, Bill Belichick's final first-round selection of his New England tenure, and now the new regime has the task of reaching a long-term agreement to keep the superstar around.
Given how impressive he has been over the last three years, it's fair to say that Gonzalez is the right guy to reset the cornerback market with a new contract. There's a reason he's considered one of the best in the league, and he consistently proves why the 31 other teams should be kicking themselves for allowing him to fall into the Patriots' lap.
They'll need to reward his production with a good contract, and if they wait too long, they might be on the hook for more money if another top-tier corner reaches a deal for a new extension before that.
Vrabel and Co. might be able to save a bit if money by getting Gonzalez to sign on the dotted line as soon as possible, so even if picking up his fifth-year option makes sense and gives them more time to reach an agreement, it's a risk they might not be willing to take, especially since they'll be in the same position next offseason but with Drake Maye.
There's no reason to risk adding more to their plate next year, so hopefully, Vrabel and Wolf will follow through on their word about wanting to get a deal done over the next few months.
