It took one play at Patriots-Eagles practice for DeMario Douglas to secure a roster spot

The Patriots' wide receiver room has been a primary focus of the offseason and the most discussed group of training camp so far for plenty of reasons, with A.J. Brown's addition being the most exciting part of all.

At the same time, there is a lot of competition within the group, as the team is finally dealing with having too many playmakers on the roster at the same time, which is not something they've had the luxury of dealing with since Tom Brady was still the quarterback, and even that would be a debate.

Among the players competing for a spot on the roster, the most has been DeMario Douglas, a fourth-year receiver who has had an up-and-down career so far, from looking like a top option to virtually disappearing in the span of just one year.

There was a lot of optimism that working with Josh McDaniels would elevate Douglas to the next level, particularly because the offensive coordinator has an impressive history of making superstars out of undersized slot receivers. But that wasn't the case in 2025, leading many to wonder if he would even make this year's roster.

Much of that has changed over the past few weeks, however, with his performance against the Eagles in their first joint practice proving further that the Patriots don't appear all that interested, or (at least) they shouldn't be, in moving him any time soon.

With so much emphasis on how Brown would look going up against his former teammates, what the rest of the Patriots' receivers could do was not as hyped going into Wednesday's practice.

But that quickly changed when Douglas absolutely Moss'd star cornerback Cooper DeJean in perhaps the most embarrassing 1-on-1 moment of the day.

Where did DeJean go? He literally disappears.

It's a huge moment for a player in Douglas' shoes, and it doesn't feel premature or overzealous to believe that this is the kind of moment that secures a spot on this year's roster.

It's just the latest example of just how good he can be for the offense. We saw glimpses of it last year, as he was used almost like a secret weapon, particularly against the Saints, even if one of his touchdowns was taken back due to a penalty.

Douglas showed off his impressive speed and ability to maneuver through defenses, and that will be invaluable this year as the Patriots face many of the league's top teams during what is already considered one of the most difficult schedules of the season.

With a receiving corps led by A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs and, hopefully, Kayshon Boutte right behind them, Douglas could become just as valuable as those ahead of him on the depth chart in some of the biggest games of the season if he can perform like this against other star cornerbacks.

It's exactly what the Patriots need, and it gives Maye another dynamic option to work with, and Douglas could ultimately become a difference-maker on game day.
