Drake Maye is making the Patriots' DeMario Douglas decision much more difficult

It has been far too long since the Patriots had the luxury of a crowded wide receiver room, but this offseason has made clear there will be difficult decisions to make before Week 1, with a few players consistently rumored to be on the cut or trade block.

One of whom is DeMario Douglas, a fourth-year receiver set to play on the final year of his contract this fall. He has had an up-and-down career so far with the Patriots, starting as a depth piece as a rookie, then seemingly becoming a WR1 in a questionable receiving corps, and has now taken on the role of a reliable secret weapon for Drake Maye.

Although he didn't thrive in Year 1 under Josh McDaniels, expectations are high for him going into 2026, especially from Drake Maye, who has consistently hyped up Douglas since he joined the team two years ago.

That might help keep him around for more than the upcoming season, particularly if he continues to stand out at practice, which he has so far this summer, and hearing Maye's belief in what Douglas can do should hold a lot of weight in the eyes of the higher-ups.

With A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs taking over the top two spots on the depth chart, the rest of the group is up for grabs, leaving Douglas to compete with guys like Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins.

Because Boutte is another trade candidate, his future in New England is just as uncertain as Douglas's, and they could be competing for the same spot on the roster. But so far, both are having a good summer, which could lead to Douglas earning a different role offensively than expected.

We've heard only excitement about the receiving corps this offseason from Maye, and he has been consistent with his optimism and support for Douglas, which he reiterated during a recent SiriusXM interview this week.

He spoke about every receiver on the roster, but what he had to say about Douglas was particularly interesting, given that he isn't expected to have a prominent role in the offense, but the quarterback believes in what he can do and trusts he can get the job done on game day.

“Next up, we have Pop [Douglas] in the slot. I think Pop’s the one from last year that’s just continuing to get better and better. You see it every year. From my rookie year being with him to Year 3 now, just kind of the connection and knowing how he runs routes.

I think he does a great job in man; it’s hard to cover him. So he’s going to be a big piece of what we do when we’re in ‘11’ personnel. I’m looking forward to seeing how he continues to grow and make more plays this year. I think he definitely will."

From what we've seen at training camp thus far, there seems to be more emphasis on including Douglas in more plays, which is a big change from last year. He was only used sparingly, but when his name was called, he made big plays, with the Saints game being the most memorable.

This year, he has more competition to face, and it won't be easy to override some of the other veterans who have already contributed more over the past year.

However, he's not shying away from what the roster battle might bring, and that is the perfect attitude to have for the next several weeks.

He said as much after practice last week, emphasizing how much he enjoys increased pressure and competition, noting that he feels it makes him better.

If that's true and we see it on the field, the Patriots might be even more forced to rethink trading him later this month.

"I never shy away from competition. You shy away from competition, you shouldn’t be in this league. In this league, everybody’s good. So, if you’re scared of competition, I honestly wouldn’t advise you to be in this league.

I thrive off competition. I feel like that makes me better. It helps me grow. And it’s people out there better, and then that’s how you learn. When you learn, man, I feel like that’s how you get better."

Given how something like this can discourage players in the league, particularly those in a similar position to Douglas, it's good to see that he's not using it as an excuse not to try or to demand a trade, and that will go a long way with this coaching staff.

In fact, he's become a constant topic of conversation amongst his teammates, who are impressed with how he approaches his training and practice, and Maye emphasizes just how important he has been to his development and a benefit on game day.

Now that he's had a full season working with McDaniels, it should be easier to incorporate him into the game plan every week, and based on how well he did when called upon last year, it's clear how they should utilize him as that secret weapon.

He'll have to continue his hot streak as the summer continues, however, to ensure that he isn't at risk of being moved. But at least at this point, there's no reason for the Patriots to move on from Douglas right now or in the near future, and Maye has made that very clear time and time again.
