Amid all the trade rumors involving the Patriots' wide receivers this past offseason, the most consistent connection to an outside player was to Giants star Kayvon Thibodeaux. Because New England's defense appeared to have holes to address, particularly in its linebacker room, trading for a 25-year-old former first-round pick would seemingly make a big impact.
He was projected to be more of an outcast in New York during the 2026 season as the team continued to improve its defensive line through big free-agent acquisitions and game-changing rookie selections.
That became clear last year with first-round pick Abdul Carter, along with veteran Brian Burns, and they added Arvell Reese in this year's draft to further boost their production. That move seemingly put Thibodeaux on the trade block, especially since he's in the final year of his contract after they picked up his fifth-year option.
But the Patriots didn't seem to inquire about his availability and instead started the season with the linebacker room they had, even with Harold Landry sidelined for the entire offseason.
That might change now that they didn't fare well against the Seahawks in Week 1, on top of the overlooked message the Giants sent about Thibodeaux's future in New York. The Patriots should take that seriously, with Robert Spillane missing practice on Monday and Landry's return still unclear.
Not to mention, the linebackers were far from stellar in Seattle, and they could use a refresh from a player like Thibodeaux, who will inevitably be motivated to prove the Giants made a mistake.

In the first Sunday Night Football of the season between the Giants and the Cowboys this weekend, Thibodeaux was not a featured part of New York's defense, as he was only on the field for 47% of all snaps, which was significant lower than Burns (84%), Carter (91%), and Reese (100%).
That should catch a team like the Patriots' attention, especially when a reporter like Dan Duggan of The Athletic claims it's part of what Thibodeaux is being asked to sacrifice for his teammates this season.
One can only imagine that he won't be all that thrilled to do that the rest of the year.

If this is his expected role moving forward, the Giants have plenty of reason to consider trading him while he's most valuable. That way, they get some kind of return for a player they invested a first-round pick in, rather than watching him leave in free agency next year for nothing.
That's where the Patriots come in and they should make an offer as soon as possible.
Based on the constant trade proposals that have circulated in recent months, most analysts believe Thibodeaux could be moved for a fourth- or fifth-round pick. That is an affordable cost for a player who could make an immediate and long-term impact on the Patriots' defense.
He's at the age Vrabel wants for his roster, and he's shown he can be the violent defender that he has very much made clear that he wants New England's defense to be, so this is a move that makes way too much sense for both sides ahead of the trade deadline next month.
If they can get a full 17 games out of him, which he hasn't done since the 2023 season when he recorded 50 combined tackles, 12 for a loss, 16 quarterback hits, 4 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and 11.5 sacks, then investing a fourth-round pick would be an absolute steal for the Patriots.
Even if they could get half that kind of production, it would still be an applaudable move for a team hoping to replicate last year. In fact, not pursuing Thibodeaux when he appears available should draw a negative response from analysts and fans alike, so hopefully the Patriots won't sit on their hands and pretend they didn't see how he was put on the back burner in the season opener.
