No matter what anybody says, or what happened during the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots were on the cusp of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in 2025. They should knock on that door again in 2026, but Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf can't rest on their laurels. They still need to improve this team.
And despite the losses of K'Lavon Chaisson and others during free agency, the Patriots did exactly that. Then they put a bow on their offseason with some nice selections, and in the early rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft. All of this said, New England still has positions that could use reinforcements.
Yes, they went out and got Dre'Mont Jones to replace Chaisson and drafted both Gabe Jacas and Quintayvious Hutchins. But it is hard to rely on rookies, and the latter is embroiled in some off-the-field issues. Behind Jones, Harold Landry III, the Patriots could use more on the edge.
New York Giants defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux could be the missing piece for Zak Kuhr's unit, and the price outlined to get him in ESPN's latest piece is more than palatable for New England. It is quite delicious, actually.
ESPN's New England Patriots-Kayvon Thibodeaux trade idea is too good to pass up
ESPN's Dan Graziano proposed the following trade between the Giants and Patriots for Thibodeaux, and he explained why the deal could make sense.
- Giants get:Â 2027 fifth-round pick
- Patriots get:Â Thibodeaux
"Why this deal makes sense: The Patriots still need edge help, have an extra fifth-rounder from the Garrett Bradbury trade and likely won't have a ton of valuable draft capital after the A.J. Brown deal. Former Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is now on Mike Vrabel's defensive staff in New England, though things didn't go great in New York, and I don't know whether that makes it more or less likely they'd be interested in Thibodeaux."
Now, before we get into what Thibodeaux could bring, let's look at Graziano's last point. Yes, Bowen knows Thibodeaux from their time in New York, and Thibodeaux's sack numbers starkly declined during those two seasons, as did his production across the board.
But Bowen's arrival also coincided with more additions up front for the Giants, so Thibodeaux played a smaller snap share and had fewer opportunities. And in fact, Thibodeaux's run defense rating actually improved under Bowen's watch, and his pressures were similar. He just wasn't finishing plays.
In terms of why this price is so easily affordable for New England, Graziano explained it simply: The Patriots have an extra fifth-rounder in the 2027 draft from the Bradbury trade. This would effectively be like Wolf swapping Bradbury for Thibodeaux.
Bradbury was not only expendable but is five years older than Thibodeaux. Yes, the Giants star will want a new deal after playing on the fifth-year club option this season, but the Patriots don't have to commit to anything before seeing him play for a full season.
At the worst, he is a one-year rental and doesn't meet expectations. Luckily, New England has a fifth-rounder to burn, not to mention three sixth-rounders next April. But Thibodeaux could ball out and earn an extension or use NE as a stepping stone for a bigger deal in free agency, netting a comp pick.
Just imagine a trio of Jones, Landry III and Thibodeaux getting after the quarterback and teaching young guns like Jacas and Hutchins. Instead of relying on those players, the Patriots can let them develop, which is a luxury in the NFL that most teams don't have.
Adding Thibodeaux would make that possible, though, and it could very well be the missing piece up front for New England at a bargain price. This is a guy who had 11.5 sacks just two years ago and is only 25 years old. If he's available for a fifth-rounder, you take the deal and don't look back.
