As training camp nears, the future of cornerback Christian Gonzalez is becoming the main topic at hand for the Patriots. Given how impressive the 24-year-old has been so far in his career, it would seem like a no-brainer to give him a much-deserved contract extension.

But the Patriots haven't approached the negotiations that way, by all reports, as they don't have any sense of urgency to get a deal done any time soon. Despite Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf's insistence that they want to keep Gonzalez around long-term, there is a growing belief that an extension won't be done before practices resume, meaning we could be on the brink of the team's latest hold-in.

It's a disastrous scenario that could very easily have been avoided, especially since the cornerback has clearly proven that he is a cornerstone of the defense and the next franchise star.

The problem is that the higher-ups don't appear as confident about that and may need more reason to get the deal done, so perhaps the latest rankings from NFL executives, coaches, and scouts will push them in the right direction.

It surely couldn't hurt, at least.

Christian Gonzalez getting an extension shouldn't be this difficult for the Patriots to agree to

In an effort to rank the top-10 players at each position ahead of the 2026 season, ESPN's group of experts recently listed the best cornerbacks in the league today, with Gonzalez coming in at No. 3.

He sits just below Broncos' Patrick Surtain and Texans' Derek Stingley, moving up from No. 6 on last year's list to officially become one of the absolute best cornerbacks in the NFL, according to some well-respected voices across the league.

"He shut everything down when we played him," an NFL offensive coach said. "We couldn't squeeze a drop. He was the main reason why. Size, ball skills, can play press or man, he's got it all."

Since joining the team as Bill Belichick's final first-round draft pick in 2023, Gonzalez has risen to the occasion and quickly made a name for himself. He put himself on the league's radar as a rookie before suffering a season-ending injury, and even in his first season, his absence was strongly felt across the defense for the rest of the year.

Upon his return the following year, he was already considered the Patriots' top cornerback on the roster, and his performance continued to prove it.

Since then, he was finally named to the Pro Bowl and earned Second-Team All-Pro honors for his performance in the 2025 season, particularly impressive during the playoffs, as noted by an NFL coach.

"Gonzalez was especially dominant in the playoffs, when he allowed 14 completions on 36 targets. His 38.8% completion percentage allowed was the lowest by any player to face 25 or more targets in a postseason since at least 2018, per NFL Next Gen Stats. His nine pass breakups in 416 regular-season coverage snaps equated to a 2.2% pass breakup rate, one of the best clips among corners."

With a tough season coming up, expectations remain high for what Gonzalez can do. But there are serious concerns about when he will be on the field. The hope is that a deal can get signed sooner rather than later, so he won't miss much training camp.

But the lack of urgency felt from the Patriots is concerning, and the longer they wait, the worse it will presumably get, particularly if the Seahawks get a deal done with Devon Witherspoon first. That will put Wolf in a position to offer Gonzalez more money, and from how he's gone about negotiations so far, it doesn't seem like he's willing to do so.

That factor right there should light a fire under the team to get a deal done more quickly, and the more praise he continues to get across the league, too.

We'll have to wait and see if they finally change their approach and get a deal done soon, or we'll have to keep waiting on bated breath until an announcement is finally made, while dealing with a presumed hold-in.
