It might be fair to say that the most controversial free-agent signing the Patriots made this offseason was offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker, a 2021 first-round draft pick by the Jets who suffered unfortunate injuries to start his NFL career.
The fact that three of his first four seasons ended prematurely due to injuries immediately made him a questionable signing in the eyes of fans, regardless of how good he has been when he is suited up on game day. It didn't help that he was coming off a triceps tear last season and started his first year in New England sidelined because of it.
It was expected to remain a problem going into training camp, but through the first few days, it has been far from that. Instead, Vera-Tucker has been taking reps with the first-team offense and has made it clear that he is on track with his recovery and is feeling "really good" so far this summer.
“I’m feeling really good right now. If you guys look, I’m out there every play, competing. I just feel really good out there.”
It's the kind of statement that needed to be heard with preseason right around the corner, and the expectation that Drake Maye will have an improved offensive line for the upcoming season. It was clearly a prioritized matter for the Patriots after the group fell apart in the Super Bowl, and Vera-Tucker is perhaps their biggest upgrade.
Fortunately, it looks like there is no reason to worry about his participation in practice moving forward, and his excitement about what the season could be for him is something all fans should be excited about, too.

Given just how important the offensive line's performance will be during what is already considered one of the most difficult schedules in the league, having Vera-Tucker ready and at his best as soon as Week 1 will be crucial.
There were concerns about whether that would actually happen, but based on his full participation in training camp so far, it's clear that won't be a problem.
Instead, there are worries about his switch from right guard and right tackle to left guard, a position he hasn't played since his rookie season five years ago.
But the 27-year-old shut down that talking point after practice earlier this week, saying he is giving himself grace during the learning process and expressing excitement about playing against some really good defensive tackles to help him get even better.
“I think just having patience for myself… It’s just little things. From playing right guard or right side of the line for the past four or five years and going over to the left, it’s definitely an adjustment. But it’s something that I look forward to, because I’ve got (defensive tackle) Milton Williams over there to help me out. Because he’s a good player. (Christian) Barmore, Cory Durden — all those guys.
We’ve still got a lot of work to do. I know I’ve still got a lot of work to do. I’m nowhere near where I want to be yet, but that’s going to take us forward.”
Vera-Tucker's transition to another position isn't the only change we'll see on the offensive line this year, as his addition means Jared Wilson is back at center, a position he last played in college two years ago.
He held down left guard impressively during his rookie season, but signing a veteran like Vera-Tucker allows the Patriots to move Wilson back to his natural role, while also creating some more stability on the left side for Will Campbell.
It's a lot of change for such an important group of players, and the hope is that these are the kinds of updates the offense needs to thrive more than it did last year, while giving Maye more time to make a play.
At this point, it's hard to say if that's what will happen. But from Vera-Tucker's optimism and the other upgrades made to the offensive roster, it seems like all the right things were done to put the group on the best page possible, and that's all you can ask for.
