Most obvious decisions the Patriots should make this offseason
There will be a plethora of decisions the Patriots need to make this offseason, and a few of them are stick out as the most obvious.
With plenty of draft picks and cap space, the Patriots can truly enact major change on their roster, and with some early indications in place, I think it’s safe to say that the team will be aggressive this offseason.
There will be a bunch of roster-altering decisions that Belichick and his front office pals will need to make. Unfortunately, some of them will not be the right move, but there are a few that stick out as the most obvious decisions the Patriots should make in 2023.
Most obvious decisions the Patriots should make this offseason
1. Add at least two new bodies at tackle
Perhaps the most obvious decision of them all is to add some bodies at tackle. With Isaiah Wynn being a free agent this year and not likely to be re-signed, and Trent Brown stuggling at left tackle, the team would benefit from adding two bodies to this stable.
Perhaps a significant free agency addition and using one of the top two draft picks to fix the offensive line would be the smart move. The tackle market in free agency is not great, but if they can land a Jawaan Taylor or Mike McGlinchey at right tackle, things could be looking up.
2. Trade for a veteran receiver
Early indications say that the Pats could make a move for a veteran receiver this offseason, and that’s the right move. Jakobi Meyers is a free agent, as is Nelson Agholor. We know that Agholor probably isn’t coming back, and Meyers might price himself out of New England.
That would further reinforce the idea that the Pats need to add someone like Brandin Cooks or DeAndre Hopkins to this offense that does not have an elite playmaker.
3. RE-SIGN Jakobi Meyers
I do think there is a cut-off for how high the Pats should go in trying to re-sign Jakobi Meyers, but this is still a must. Meyers is unbelievably valuable to the team, and while he isn’t an elite target, he’s proven to be a reliable target.
He’s a nice WR2 or WR3 and would fit that role in just about every offense in the NFL. There really is no reason for the team to not bring him back. They need help at this position, and Meyers is part of the solution.
Pairing a re-signing of Meyers with a trade for DeAndre Hopkins, for example, would form a nice duo. Add Kendrick Bourne and Tyquan Thornton to that mix, and all of a sudden the Patriots’ WR room is looking stellar.
