1. Trey Lance might be gone

Despite his limited production in college, Lance has been shooting up draft boards due to his raw physical talent, which is already a worrying thought for New England. To make things even worse, the San Francisco 49ers, owners of the No. 3 pick in the draft, have apparently decided on him as one of the two candidates to be their next franchise quarterback.

The 49ers have reportedly narrowed down their options at pick No. 3 to Lance or Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, meaning that two of Belichick’s best quarterback prospects could end up with the 49ers. While the Patriots are trying to trade up for Justin Fields, missing out on Lance could be a bitter blow.

Trey Lance could’ve been New England’s franchise quarterback.

Lance’s arm strength might be the best of the five top prospects, and his ability to make plays with his legs out of structure should only have Belichick more interested. Unfortunately, Kyle Shanahan might view him as the perfect candidate to run the 49ers’ offense.

Lance might be the most volatile of the big five quarterback prospects, but he might also have the highest ceiling. Lance could’ve sat behind Newton, learned the game, and eventually taken the reins. That scenario is looking unlikely by the hour, however.
