Another Phillip Dorsett

Last season the Patriots made a trade with the Indianapolis Colts prior to the regular season. With Andrew Luck’s shoulder injury not improving, the Patriots traded Jacoby Brissett to Indianapolis for Phillip Dorsett.

Dorsett was a first-round pick by the Colts in 2015 but never quite lived up to expectations. While his stats weren’t anything to write home about, Dorsett did appear in 15 games for the Patriots, starting two of them

Dorsett worked hard to earn the trust of the coaching staff and it paid off. He had a big reception against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship game and even drew two targets in the Super Bowl against the Eagles. Now, with a full offseason under his belt, Dorsett has moved into the starting lineup and looks to be a keeper for New England.

Dorsett caught all seven of his targets for 66 yards in the season opener against the Houston Texans, scoring a touchdown as well. This is a great example for Coleman to follow now that he is in New England.

Coleman’s situation is similar to Dorsett’s. He did not live up to his first round hype in his first two seasons before landing in New England. If Coleman puts in the work, there are opportunities to succeed in New England. Catching passes from Tom Brady is something wide receivers dream of, and now he can do it.

Coleman will probably need some time to learn the playbook, something that is difficult to do in New England. However, there is immense talent there. He could force himself onto the field, much like Dorsett did if he works hard and picks up the Patriots’ nuances.

This was a great landing spot for Coleman to get his career back on track. It was also a worthwhile gamble by New England, who need bodies at the wide receiver spot.
