Pass Defense

While the rushing defense was improved against the Jets, the pass defense was as much of a disaster as usual. The Patriots defense has been underwhelming all season, and through the air, the struggles continued.

The Patriots were shorthanded, as Stephon Gilmore was sidelined because of a concussion. With him sidelined, special teamer Johnson Bademosi was forced into heavy snaps, playing 73 out of a possible 76 defensive snaps. Without Gilmore, the Patriots could have really used a strong pass rush but that didn’t happen.

Josh McCown looked comfortable in the pocket, helping to lead the Jets to an early 14-0 lead. The Patriots did end up sacking McCown four times, hitting him 10 and forcing two interceptions, but he did plenty of damage.

Coming into the game, McCown’s season-high for passing yards was only 249 yards. He amassed almost 200 yards in the first half alone, a plateau he had not reached in three games this season.

McCown having that kind of success against the Patriots would normally be embarrassing, but the Patriots pass defense has been poor all season. They have allowed over 300 yards passing in every game. It is arguably the worst part of the team right now, and things won’t get easier next week when the Patriots have a Super Bowl rematch against the Atlanta Falcons.
