3. Montee Ball signed to practice squad

The first move the Patriots executed yesterday afternoon was the signing of former Denver Broncos running back Ball to the practice squad. Click here to read my immediate reaction to the signing.

This news broke before the development of Blount’s placement on the injured reserve. Now that Blount is ruled out for the rest of the season, it’s more likely than not that Ball will be activated in the coming weeks to provide depth behind Bolden and James White in the backfield.

In fact, Ball will probably be competing for snaps with his former Wisconsin teammate White. Both players offer a similar skill set as pass catchers out of the backfield, although Ball is better built to handle work between the trenches and White is more explosive in the open field.
