New England Patriots kick-off in 29 days: profiling No. 29 LeGarrette Blount
Opening day countdowns are great. So are player profiles. Here at Musket Fire, we decided to combine them and create a Week 1 countdown-oriented, jersey number-dictated player profile series. Yesterday we looked at No. 30 Duron Harmon, and the day before that it was No. 31 Tarell Brown. Because today marks 29 days until the New England Patriots open 2015, we are profiling No. 29, running back LeGarrette Blount.
Signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent back in 2010, Blount has played in 72 games over his five NFL seasons. In that action, Blount has accumulated 3,258 yards on 704 carries (average of 4.6 yards per rush) and 25 touchdowns.
Blount started his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being traded to New England in 2013. As a rookie in 2010, Blount surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark, becoming only the second undrafted rookie to reach that milestone.
The following season, Blount ripped off one of the best runs in recent memory, a definite career highlight:
It seems as if Blount is best suited to play in New England more than any other NFL city. As a Patriot, he is averaging 4.9 yards per carry, better than the 4.6 he posted in Tampa and the 4.1 in Pittsburgh.
Without a doubt, Blount is the best running back on the Patriots’ roster. He will miss Week 1 against his former Steelers teammates as a result of the marijuana possession he got in trouble for about a year ago, but expect Blount to be the Patriots’ primary back for the rest of the way.

Right now, Blount is dealing with a sprained MCL that has limited him in practice as of late. What’s encouraging, though, is a recent report from the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe that rules out the possibility of Blount having suffered structural damage in the knee. With that extra week of rest from the suspension, Blount should be good and ready to go against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2.
