There have been many great "trios" in the history of the NFL. When it comes to the Patriots, the trio of Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, and Rob Gronkowski, who terrorized defenses for years, is one that immediately comes to mind.
While the current Patriots' triplets of Drake Maye, Stefon Diggs, and TreVeyon Henderson don't immediately stoke the same fear, it's possible that they could be just that by the end of this season and beyond. CBS Sports' Jared Dubin had the threesome ranked in the "room for improvement" in his rankings of triplets across the league.
Maye is entering his second season, Henderson is a rookie, and Diggs is looking for a bounceback season after his 2024 campaign was cut short by a torn ACL. Where does that leave the Patriots' triplets heading into 2025?
Patriots next dominant trio will be a force by the end of this season
While many expect the 31-year-old Diggs to be a bridge-type top wide receiver, if he can do more than catch dink-and-dunk-type passes, that will be a good sign for New England's offense. Henderson's explosiveness and versatility in the passing and running game have been well-noted, and every good set of triplets needs a valuable running back.
And then there's Maye, who the Patriots are counting on to be their franchise quarterback for generations to come. Diggs and Henderson are two vital pieces that Maye needs to be successful, and if you put the three of them together and if they produce, that is a scary prospect for the rest of the league.
Even though he played behind a bad offensive line and had no weapons as a rookie, Maye showed promise, and the chatter around the Patriots all offseason was that if they put an offensive line in front of him and some weapons around him, they should let Maye cook.
Well, the Patriots' triplets may have lots of room for improvement as the 2025 season kicks off in several weeks, but that's not a bad thing. The low(ish) expectations could have them flying under the radar, and they could come out of nowhere and shock the league this season.
