Texans' superstar defender might be the happiest of all after Kayshon Boutte trade

After an offseason filled with rumors about their plans for Kayshon Boutte, the Patriots finally traded the receiver to the Texans on Monday afternoon in what is already considered a controversial deal by many because of what they got in return.

Despite reports that teams were interested in acquiring Boutte for the past few months, the Patriots never got close to agreeing to a trade until the Texans offered a second-year safety and a seventh-round pick, much lower than what reports claimed the team was looking for.

Regardless, he will now continue his career in Houston, and while it was a questionable decision on New England's part to send him to an AFC contender, they were in great need of receiver help after two of their top players were injured just last week.

Even better is the likely reaction from one of their best defensive superstars, cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.

Considered one of the best at the position in the league, Boutte has consistently gotten the better of him when the Patriots and Texans matched up. In fact, he caught a 40-yard touchdown with Stingley in coverage in the playoffs earlier this year, quickly becoming a highlight catch of the postseason for the team and the league.

It wasn't the first time Boutte got the better of the 2-time Pro Bowler, and it probably wouldn't have been the last if he remained anywhere but the Texans.

In the years since Boutte was drafted in the sixth round in 2023, he has consistently improved and shown why he was once considered a first-round prospect. He really thrived throughout last season, putting together a string of highlight plays that even NFL social media pages showcased, including his catch over Stingley.

The same can be said about another impressive grab he made against the Texans during the 2024 season, scoring the Patriots' first touchdown of the day with the cornerback literally on his back.

It's safe to say that he was quickly becoming Stingley's kryptonite, and now that they're teammates, he won't have to worry about that happening anywhere but the practice field.

Their "rivalry" gained more attention over the past two seasons, making it a big story leading up to their postseason matchup earlier this year.

Much of that had to do with Boutte making his job look easy by making impressive catches over a 2-time First-Team All-Pro, something few receivers in the league have managed.

Now they're teammates, and instead of worrying about losing a step in a game, Stingley will have the opportunity to practice against Boutte and become an even better cornerback, if that's even possible, yet also scary to imagine becoming a reality.

It's a big win for the Texans and a loss for the Patriots, who were looking like a team equipped to go into the 2026 season with a deep receiving corps ready to make Drake Maye's job much easier than just one year ago.
