The New England Patriots have finally ripped off the Band-Aid with a Kayshon Boutte trade after months of rumors surrounding the young wide receiver, and he's heading to another AFC contender.
The Patriots are reportedly trading Boutte to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round pick and safety Jaylen Reed, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. This trade sends yet another Patriot to Houston, which may be the result of former Pats executive and Texans overlord Nick Caserio leaning on his connections with New England.
This brings an end to Boutte's unique Patriots career. From a sixth-round pick who fell in the NFL Draft due to a gambling scandal to a key member of an AFC champion, Boutte simply found himself squeezed out of a spot in New England's long-term plans due to the offseason moves they made.

Boutte was a victim of his own success last year in New England. He didn't play well enough for the Patriots to lock him in as a franchise cornerstone, but he did show enough to have teams around the league view him as a tradable asset who could help their respective teams.
Boutte, who caught 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns last season, emerged as one of Drake Maye's best downfield targets. However, with AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs arriving in town during the same offseason and Pop Douglas in need of a new contract, it seemed unlikely the Patriots would spend big on another receiver like Boutte.
The Patriots will also acquire Reed, who recorded 14 tackles and established himself as a quality special teamer in Houston. The former Penn State star has potential as a safety, as he makes up for coverage limitations with some bone-crunching hits and decent performances in zone coverage.
Houston seemed like the most obvious spot for Boutte to land, even if it isn't a long-term home. With Tank Dell recovering from injury and much-hyped former No. 34 pick Jayden Higgins having torn his ACL, Boutte can provide value as both an injury replacement and someone who can raise the ceiling of this room.
It stinks to see Boutte's Patriots journey end so abruptly right after the team made it to the Super Bowl, but with so many other receiving options in the mix for the Patriots, there was no way to keep a prized asset like Boutte for very long.
