Since the moment the New England Patriots announced they were releasing wide receiver Stefon Diggs after just one season, fans immediately demanded he be brought back, even on a revised contract, considering that was reportedly the reason he was cut.

And in the months since then, there have been countless rumors about a mutual interest to return to Foxboro, and plenty of chatter to suggest it was only a matter of time before a deal was struck, even after they acquired A.J. Brown via trade earlier this month.

But as the days pass by, the conversation about Diggs' potential return keeps flip-flopping, and the latest update from the receiver himself seems to indicate that a homecoming is not as close as many fans were hoping for.

In fact, he was essentially promoting himself to one team in particular that has also been heavily connected to him this offseason, and from what Diggs said, it kind of sounded like it's something we might see come to fruition sooner rather than later, which is far from what a lot of Patriots fans wanted to hear at this stage of the offseason.

Stefon Diggs did more than hint at the next team he wants to play for after Patriots departure

While speaking to a FOX affiliate in Washington, D.C., in recent days, Diggs emphasized his desire to play for his hometown team, the Washington Commanders, saying he would love to come home after being flooded with questions about it this offseason.

He suggested there might have been conversations with the team about a deal, and if that's accurate, we could see him suit up for the NFC contender in 2026 instead of the Patriots.

It's the brutal reality that some fans will have to learn to be okay with, and maybe the trade for Brown will help make up for the loss of Diggs, since he is another explosive playmaker that will inevitably make Drake Maye an even better quarterback.

Having Brown and Diggs work together would have been a dream scenario, especially when you look at the Patriots' history and how unstoppable they were with two top receivers on offense, all of whom worked with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

The Patriots could easily have one of, if not the very best, offenses if Diggs returned, but it doesn't appear to be a legitimate possibility at this point and likely won't be in the future unless teams continue to look the other way and sign other receivers instead.

There might be a point where Diggs is still unsigned, and it makes sense for him and New England to reunite. But for the time being, it's looking more likely that he will be a Commander this upcoming season, and the dream of a high-power offense for Maye will remain just a dream.
