Stefon Diggs joined the New England Patriots this past offseason, inking a three-year deal with the team. Diggs was coming off an injury-filled season with the Houston Texans, and he was known for his tendency to pop off when things didn't go his way.
Diggs spoke about that during Super Bowl Media Week, discussing how the narrative that's followed him throughout his career isn't necessarily accurate. People have always been quick to label Diggs as a dramatic player, and he touched on that.
"How people perceive you is different. I can't control people's perspective from a young player to an older player," Diggs said. "People look at certain instances, certain plays or certain sideline (interactions) and start forming an opinion about a person that they don't know personally. ... If you knew me personally, you'd know I love the game of football. I just always wanted to win, and I don't care how people feel about that. Here, it just kind of worked out in my favor. So people perceive it differently that I'm this different person."
Stefon Diggs opens up about the reputation critics decided for him
What Diggs is saying is that, while people might have labeled him as a diva, in his mind, he's been a player that simply wants to win. As he said, it's worked out for him well in New England, as, in just one year with the team, they're in the Super Bowl. He also said he doesn't care how people feel about him.
People can have their opinions on players and it's not crazy to see why people might perceive Diggs the way that they have. He was traded away from Buffalo in the 2024 offseason because of his antics, and after a down year in Houston that ended due to injury, he came to New England and helped them get to a Super Bowl.
It's interesting to hear Diggs' take on all of this and how he doesn't feel he's changed during his career. He's continued to be himself and not care what the "haters" might think of him. Whether or not that's the right approach is up to interpretation, but it's clearly worked for Diggs on the field.
He's in the Super Bowl with a chance to win the first title of his career.
