The Patriots went into the 2025 offseason having to address their longtime need for a clear No. 1 wide receiver, and fortunately, Mike Vrabel and Co. did just that by signing Stefon Diggs in free agency. It was widely criticized, given that he was coming off a year he spent more than half the season on IR due to an ACL tear.

But his performance in his first year with the Patriots has proven to be exactly what they needed, and he hasn't missed a beat, as he became the first receiver since Julian Edelman in 2019 to record 1,000+ receiving yards in a season.

His postseason performance has been a bit quiet, far more than anyone anticipated, but his leadership and clutch showings have been a difference-maker for the offense. And now he's experiencing his first Super Bowl in his 11-year career, and it got him emotional after the win over the Broncos on Sunday.

If this wasn't validating for wanting out of Buffalo, it's hard to say what would be.

Stefon Diggs' decision to leave the Bills has already paid off in his first season with the Patriots

The pure emotion from Diggs after the win is exactly what Patriots fans love to see from the players, because it shows not only how they're feeling, too, but also shows just how much this game means to them.

That's the kind of attitude that can get a team far, as they play for each other and for the fanbase, both of which have been repeated by the players throughout the 2025 season.

Now they'll face the biggest test of all by proving just how far they have come in one season, finishing the regular season with 14 wins and going undefeated on the road, a first for any team in NFL history.

Diggs was a big part of their efforts this season and is experiencing the most success of his career, something he never would have had if he stayed with the Bills. The receiver will need to be a big part of their offensive game plan in the Super Bowl, which hasn't been the case this postseason, but that can't be the case in a game with such high stakes.

We'll need to see primetime Diggs show up in two weeks to really give the Patriots a chance. Based on his emotions, it's clear that he wants to be that guy for this team, and they'll certainly need his help to get the job done against whoever they're bound to face.

It's just the latest example of why Vrabel and Co. made the right decision to take a gamble on a player that every other team overlooked because of his injury.

They're certainly kicking themselves now.
