With June 1 rapidly approaching, New England Patriots fans are ready for another big bite of news. As we know, the Patriots are widely expected to make a trade for current Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown.
If and when Brown ultimately arrives in New England, fans are going to have questions not just for him but for the other wide receivers in the room. Brown is a big presence with a strong personality who commands a good number of targets.
What about the other receivers, like newly-signed Romeo Doubs? How would the rest of them feel about Brown coming into the fold? Doubs was recently asked about the potential of bringing in Brown, and this is what he had to say per The Athletic's Chad Graff:
“I have a ton of respect for him. … If he’s here, I would love to have him here.”
That's a solid answer, but also a predictive answer, from Doubs.
Romeo Doubs is saying the right things about a Patriots-AJ Brown trade
Right now, it's easy for Doubs to say the right things about potentially bringing in Brown. It will get a little bit harder once Brown is actually in the building and participating in practices, but there is no doubt about the assumption that he'll continue to be a veteran.
It could be tough thinking that someone more notable could be coming in and taking away from his targets. That's obviously crossed Doubs' mind more than once. When the season begins, and if Brown is in Philly, the test is going to be much harder.
Hopefully, Doubs has learned from his past with the Green Bay Packers.
For those who might not have followed Doubs before he joined the Patriots, Doubs has a history of not necessarily being happy with his role in a given offense. Back in 2024, Doubs skipped a pair of Packers practices, and the reported reason was precisely that; he was "upset" with his role on the team.
Now, he's also refuted those claims in separate media outlets. But his attitude seemed pretty evident at times in Green Bay.
The situation occurred a year and a half ago, at this point, so obviously, one would be led to believe the past is indeed in the past. However, I also can't help but wonder about the stark difference between Green Bay and New England.
In Green Bay, Doubs didn't have a big-name wide receiver in the same room as him. The Packers have sort of had a plethora of WR2/WR3 types for a while, now, since the departure of Davante Adams. So, it was easy for Doubs to become "the guy" at times.
Now, in a room with someone like Brown, Doubs has to compete for targets with a true alpha.
It'll be a different dynamic, for sure, but hopefully Doubs and Brown can come together and mesh as teammates. The potential for New England's offense in 2025, with Drake Maye at the helm, knows no bounds if it were to add just one more piece in Brown.
Doubs sounds like he'd welcome Brown with open arms. So, for now, everyone's happy.
